Last essay I was told off as I had made notes then written them up in my essay a bit too close to original text - i was literally 3 sentences. I've been extra careful this time but still paranoid - is there anywhere I can check it before submitting?

do you not have turnitin on your uni study site?

RadicalRunner · 23/07/2014 08:58

Yes - but once you upload it we're not allowed to see the percentage until it is being marked so no way to check beforehand.

PS. If you upload it to one of the free sites would it then show up 100% on turnitin - as it existed on the internet?

I wouldn't risk using a free site for that reason.

I was told that small amounts of similarity are ok on Turnitin. For example, the whole of your references should have similarity to other published works. They don't mind parts of sentences, they just don't want to see entire chunks originating from one source. If you know you haven't copied or semi copied and that you have referenced correctly, you shouldn't have anything to concern you.

My Uni had a separate turnitin account that you could use for checking your work; you got to see a detailed breakdown before you submitted the work. Does yours not have anything like that? We had to register for it as a module on the online workspace first. Don't know of any others I'm afraid, TBH I wouldn't trust anywhere random online either.
