passing cot from one dc to the next-new matress?

for those of you who passed down dc1s cot to dc2 etc-did you get a new matress for each dc, or just continued using the original one?

We got a new one. Think the advice is to get a new mattress for each dc due to bacteria in the old mattress that increases the chance of SIDS. Apologies if I'm wrong though!

Mine didn't go into the cot until 6m so not new born, I also had a mattress which had a removable top cover which I could boil wash.

I put both DDs in the same mattress. It had a removable cover which I washed. How on earth is it risking a 6m old's life to re-use a mattress Dear God.

My dc1&2 used the same mattress. Close in age so one was out and next one was in (after a wash)

Dc3 had a new one as born a few years later

We did. It was not worth taking any risks with things like this.

We did as didn't want to risk anything and NHS advises to get a new mattress.

I'm not sure about this. DD's cot mattress was always covered with a waterproof mattress protector, so what could possibly have happened to the mattress to make it unsafe for another baby?

Change the mattress. The Lullaby Trust (formerly FSID) has been researching SIDS for years and this has reduced deaths by 70% since 1990. Take their advice I say.

We've used the same mattress for both dcs. It always had a removable waterproof cover on (dd had reflux and chucked lots, so was there to keep the mattress clean). It's still in perfect condition, and still has a waterproof cover under the sheets, so seems silly and wasteful to chuck it out.

Yes, we got a new mattress, just for peace of mind.
I'm not sure of the prices these days though as it was a long time ago

Well we didn't. I washed the mattress protector and cover and gave it all a thorough wipe down and not had any cause for concern.

No. I washed the cover and gave it an airing. As advised by my friend who is a consultant paed.

we reused the mattress as it had a removable washable cover and a waterproof covering that could be cleaned. There is a bigger risk if bringing in a mattress from another family than if using for a sibling. The Lullabytrust actually says this:

Generally we would advise it is safest to have a new mattress for each baby, though we know this is not always possible. There is some evidence to suggest that bringing in a mattress from another home might increase the risk of sudden infant death very slightly. When using your own mattress for a second (or more) time, ensure it is still firm and flat with no tears or holes, and is not sagging in places. Thoroughly clean the waterproof layer and ensure the mattress is clean and dry before making it up with fresh bed clothes

No. I thought the advice was that it didn't matter so much for siblings.

Completely forgot to do this as had other things on my mind like redundancy . DS2 absolutely fine. I suppose it depends on your risk tolerance but given they were close in age and mattress was as good as new, seems a bit wasteful to get another.

I had new each time only because of the time between dcs, I had nowhere safe to store it inbetween them. If it had been 1 in 1 out or clean safe storage I would of reused, except after ds he demolished his no idea how. I currently have 2 sharing one.

i'm getting a new moses mattress for DC2 when he/she's newborn, but will probably keep DS's current cot mattress for when DC2 needs it around 6mo.
