7mo starting eye infection - home remedy ahead of doc visit?

Hi, DS2 is 7mo and starting to get a gunky eye. I'm not surprised an infection is starting, as it's the one he rubs frantically when tired.

I will take him to the doc tomorrow, but is there anything I could try in the meantime? A natural anti-bacterial?

Cammomile tea bag .( or freshcammomile )...let the water cool and then bathe.

Do you breast feed? apparently breast milk on the effected eye is good.

Wailywailywaily · 07/07/2014 17:03

Will probably only work if its your milk!

Breast milk!

PastaandCheese · 07/07/2014 17:07

YY to breastmilk.

Is it weird DH used my breastmilk on his infected eye?

Ha, yes I know about BM (fond memories of squirting it into DS1's eye direct from source!) but sadly we stopped BF a couple of months ago :-(

One of my DC had a gunky eye a few weeks after birth and we were advised to use cotton wool and lukewarm water. Using a separate piece of cotton wool to wipe each eye (if both are affected), wiping away from the infected eye.

Not much help I know with regards to a remedy sorry! We had to have drops to rid of it eventually.

PajamaQueen · 07/07/2014 18:05

Should also say lukewarm boiled water - not any water. Hope he gets relief from it soon.

Chipandspuds · 07/07/2014 18:09

DS had conjunctivitis I don't know how many times and cotton wool dipped in cooled boiled water was always recommended by the doctor (in addition to the eye drops). Always wipe once in the same direction and bin the cotton wool and use a fresh piece per wipe!

A gunky eye isn't necessarily an infection.

Try cooled boiled water to clean it regularly, and see how it goes.

If the actual eyeball and membranes become red and sore looking then he may need antibiotic eye drops.

Looks like easing symptoms until we get something for it. Do you know if a pharmacist can sell me anything that will help? Difficult to fit doc in tomorrow and don't want to wait in case it escalates.

My 6 month old has exactly the same thing! Gunky & gooey eye which he keeps rubbing. His eye lashes keep sticking together too & they were really bad this morning. We've bathed it in warm water for 2 days & it's no better so going to Doctors tomorrow

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 08/07/2014 12:50

The pharmacist won't sell you anything if you say it's for a child under 3 or 5, can't remember which. Then you'll go to the GP and get a prescription for the exact same stuff. Confused

mousmous · 08/07/2014 12:52

yes to cooled camomile tea.
use loo paper or cotton pads soaked with the tea to wipe the gunk out.
