Vagina names

I have a son. Willy seemed most obvious choice for his privates. Feels ok to use in front of friends, family, nursery and playgroup. It is clear what is meant. But now he wants a name for the female alternative, the vagina.

There is no clear female equivalent. Fuffi, fairy, crimons seems unclear. Vagina too clinical and I've been told fanny could cause offense.

What do you use?

The correct term for the bit you can see on a girl is vulva. We've told DD that this is the proper name but that lots of people choose a name for that area, which is private.

We now use 'gina' (pr 'gyna') after trying 'yoni' and a few other things she didn't like. And she's only two!

It is a vulva.

Vagina is where baby comes out.

Urethra where wee comes out.

I felt a bit cringy when this came up with my DS (he has a little sister), but I got over myself and used the world vulva. I'm used to it now - and dd uses this word as does ds.

I've explained that some people call their parts different names - we have a book - but he shrugged it off.

Not a big deal looking back!

It is a vulva as previously said. I got to my 40's thinking it was called a vagina Blush

I have 2 DDs, they have both been taught to call their genital area their vulva. Their GPs cringe slightly when they hear that word. I cringe a great deal more when I hear it referred to by a range of twee euphemisms. Vulva is NOT "clinical" it is the correct name for that part of the female anatomy and if everyone used it consistently there would be no reason to be embarrassed about it.

Vulva is the corresponding term to penis (and testicles).

I don't think there is a universally-accepted corresponding term to willy.

Boudica1990 · 07/07/2014 16:31

Always referred to as "your bits" in our household. Pretty unisex.

E.g. "pull up your knickers and put your bits away they are private" or "stop pulling at your bits in public"

AcrossthePond55 · 07/07/2014 17:31

I agree with vulva for the correct name & tried to teach my sons the correct name. However somehow it ended up being called a 'hoo-hoo' in our house whereas a penis was always called a penis (until DSs were old enough learn the 'rude' terms from their friends). Maybe because I'm the only female in the house.

It's a twinkle for a girl or a winkle for a boy in our house. Dd has just discovered it and always has her hands in her nappy.....

We did use vulva but my mum used twinkle and dd likes the word.

CultureSucksDownWords · 07/07/2014 20:48

AllHail, what do your children think "twinkle twinkle little star" is about then?!
