Baby won't settle in new cot!

Hi all, I'm going out of my mind with no sleep! My 5 month old has slept through since being 3 month old for 12 hours she's really good! Recently I have put her in her cot because she is just way too big for her Moses basket. She settles fine at first, I put her bed at usual time and she sleeps but all of a sudden she keeps waking up in the night and won't settle again she keeps getting really upset, and I'm going out of my mind trying to think of things to do. Please help if you can! Much appreciated

The fact that she settles in it initially suggests she doesn't object to it too much, and perhaps it just feels unfamiliar if she wakes during the night. Or possibly teething / waking for another reason? There are so many periods of sleep regression with little ones, often teeth or growth spurt-related. I would go in during the night when she wakes up upset and soothe and stroke, and hope the phase is a short-lived one! One thing I found very helpful for dd2 and night-time soothing was Bella the Butterfly lullaby toy -

At 20 months dd2 still adores it and if she is unsettled during the night I soothe her, pop the quiet lullaby on, and she usually goes back to sleep. Hope it passes soon for you!

How long have you had this trouble?

Iggly · 06/07/2014 17:46

It could be coincidence - there's a five month sleep regression which might be why....

Is the cot where the basket use to be? Could she be disorientated when she wakes?

Could you try putting the basket in the cot to see if she sleeps through so you can rule out location as the issue or/and get her use to one thing at a time?

Or Could be the openness feels strange, maybe sleeping bags would help.

I'm not sure really just since we got the cot! Confused myself to be honest x

Could also be cooler in the night causing her to wake, are there any drafts?

In the same position she settles fine but wakes in the night, well I'm a bit stuck really (this is my first child which I'm guessing you can all gather) but when she was in the Moses basket she just had blankets when I put her in the cot I tried a grow bag in fear she's got more space to pull the covers over her face but she does not like the grow bags whatsoever so I'm wondering if she would be ok with the same blanket she had in her Moses basket?

My DD went through something similar to this. We ultimately couldn't get her to settle in her cot at all and since about 7mo she has been sleeping on a single mattress on her (thoroughly baby-proofed) bedroom floor. It's made things much easier! This may not be right for you and I'm sure i's worth trying some other suggestions first, but I just thought I'd add it to the mix. Good luck.

You could try putting a ring of rolled up towels under the cot sheet to form a sort of nest for her, to mimic the basket. Reduce the height slowly over time. It's v different sleeping in a cot.

Blankets would be fine so long as they're cellular, and she's feet to foot position in the cot, but most babies would kick them off.
