my friend has one daughter, she's 11 now. she and her partner were always adament they would have only 1 child. but on holiday this year her daughter said to her " mum I wish I could have had a sister or brother". my friend is really upset over this, she feels she's denied her child something very special, esp. as she's close to her own siblings. I can't say much to help her as I've got 2 and I'm so glad we had ds2 as they get on great and are very close.

just feel really sorry for friend (and her dd)

Show her the lovely thread about the good things about having an only child. I'll look for a link. It has lots of lovely, positive comments.

Remeber there is no guarantee a sibling would have been a good close friend to play with. Many siblings don't get on.

cant they have any more?
i know the gap is large but she would be able to help out.
there are 7 years between me and my youngest brother and i loved helping mum look after him.

why is it sad? she made that choice and all kids say this anyway. Dh sister always says she wishes she was still an only child (he is 8 yr younger) and she is in her 40s ffs

A lot of other kids actively wish their sibling had never been born, believe me!
