Potty Training - when & how to start and tips for childcare ?

Hi all,

DS is 20 mo and I am thinking of starting to potty train him. Is it too early? He has started telling me when he is about to poo - he says 'poo poo' and goes and lies down on the changing mat :) He's done this a few times now, so I thought maybe it's time..

How do I go about this? Does he start with doing a poo on the potty and then learn how to pee or does it happen all at once? Also, I work full time and he goes to a childminder 4 days a week - so I cannot start till I get a buy in from her right?

What do I need to buy apart from a potty? Any books that you can recommend?

Thanks !! :)

P.S. I did post this in the 'ppotty training' section but didn't get any reply - hence posting here...

We had a few cheap potties and got ds to sit on them before getting in the bath (he always weed in the bath) and told him he'd done a week. We started leaving him with no nappies and told him to wee on his potty if he needed to (sometimes closely following him around).

We did this for a few months then just ditched the pants one week. He got wees quickly but would insist on a nappy for a poo. We ended up using chocolate buttons to bribe him to use the potty!

As for childcare - your cm should take the lead from you. Ask her her opinion as she would have done this before.

Hi mumto if he's telling you he needs to poo then yes I'd say he's ready to potty train. I got those bambino mio fabric underpants and they worked well to catch the worst when DS had accidents. I had two potties in the living room and one in the bathroom as in the early days he often didn't make it to the bathroom. I potty trained DS1 when I had a week off work so that we could concentrate on just that and he got it within a couple of days. If we went out DS wore pull up nappies as we got caught short once when we couldn't find a public toilet quick enough! But when he was older we eventually ditched those too.
