Borderlands 2 OK for a 13 year old?

DS is badgering...

Until he turned 13 (5 months ago), I've always gone strictly with the age ratings on all films, games etc, but since then I've relented and allowed some (not all) 15 cert games - eg Skyrim.

He's now asking for Borderlands 2 - citing parent reviews here: www.commonsensemedia.org/game-reviews/borderlands-2/user-reviews/adult that suggest it's OK from age 12 up. He knows he's not allowed COD or GTA or any other 18 rated games.

Would love to hear from any that have played the game - are these reviews right, or is this a website created by early teenagers to persuade their parents to buy them unsuitable games?!

Verdicts please...

Hi,

This is a very sensitive topic but I would be wary of any website that moves away from the work done by the Video Standards Council, PEGI and UKie. They work hard to make sure parents can make an educated decision on the suitability of games for their kids.

There is a site created by UKie called AskAboutGames (www.askaboutgames.com/) to give guidance.

The guidance ensures that retailers do not sell or make available age inappropriate games to kids and ensures parents are involved in the discussion.

I have played Borderlands (1 & 2) and although it is cartoon based there is violent content, swearing and sexual references (language and images).

You are the best judge of the maturity of your kids. I'd suggest you search Youtube for reviews and gameplay and make a considered decision based on what you see. The good thing about Youtube is that the "Teenage" reviews tend to show the stuff you would want to be aware of before making a decision.

Hope this is some help.

Best

John
