blasted things won't come off, they have had multiple baths, been swimming twice and I've tried wet wipes

Brillo pad?

Seriously, I think baby oil is meant to work.

You need something oily - baby oil is ideal. But anything oily will do.

Nail polish remover works a treat.

Olive oil. Just hold an olive oil soaked kitchen towel on their skin for a minute, and then rub it off.

Vegetable oil. Works wonderfully.
