Piercing screams from teething pain... Any recommendations?

Hi all. dS2 has suddenly started teething today. We've had three bouts of inconsolable and incredibly piercing screams this afternoon. We gave him Sophie, tried ice pops to chew and rubbing his guns with our fingers.

Even Paracetamol barely made a dent in the poor little guy's pain.

Did anyone else's DC suffer so dramatically? dS1 sailed through it with some grumpiness and frantic chewing.

What else can we do for him?

Ibuprofen is the only thing that really helps IME. Obv only a short term fix for the couple of days of extreme upset before the tooth pops.

DS seemed to get a lot of relief from Ashton and Parsons despite my scientific brain thinking it wasn't possible. Dentinox teething gel had marginal effect.

Depending on age, dd had most benefit from a whole peeled raw carrot, straight from the fridge. Chewed with total glee.

The other thing is to be very sure it is just teething and not something else such as an ear infection. Mine pulled ears and grabbed faces with both so can be difficult to tell.

Piercing and inconsolable sounds like it could be an ear infection. Worth a trip to the GP?

Ibuprofen is more effective than paracetamol for teething pain.

Teething gel?
Cold teether from the fridge?
Teething powder?

DS definitely calmed down with Nelsons homeopathic granules (despite me having no faith in anything "alternative) - within a few weeks he looked like a little bird just opening his mouth for a top up dose when it hurt him!

Ibuprofen. I've heard good things about Anbesol but I think you need to be able to see where tooth is coming through. Is he running a temperature?- I might have a trip to GP just to rule out an ear infection.
