Safety gear on scooter/balance bike - 2yo

Ds has his first scooter this week (just shy of 2.5 yr old) he's getting on ok with it we've got him a helmet but drawn the line at elbow pads/knee pads.

Does everyone else use all of the above, just helmet, none of above? Interested really as thinking about other kids in park I don't remember seeing others wearing anything.

Will be a balance bike next I think and again I would always have him weRing a helmet that's not precious is it?

Always best to start them off with a crash helmet from day one, they then don't know any different. Don't worry about what every other parent is doing, best to be on the safe side. What I would say is that it is important that you abide by the same rules as we often see the kids out on bikes and the parent is riding beside them without one on! What message does that send!? My Daughter used to complain about the helmet messing up her hair but I emphasised that her hair would never sit straight if she had a dent in her head! Balance bikes look brilliant, he sounds like he's got good balance to begin with so he'll do well with the balance bike. Enjoy.

We decided no helmet for a scooter but obligatory for balance bike. My husband is a mountain biker and spent ages thinking about how you fall off a scooter... It's quite different to the fall from a bike apparently!

We don't have elbow or knee pads but he dos have bruises on his knees constantly and has wrapped trousers falling off.

He has a helmet before for when he went on daddy's bike (not hurtling down mountaing!)
