Would You Report To SS?

Have decided to report someone to social services. There's a woman with 3 kids who lives near me, the kids are always out on their own (9yrs, 4yrs, and 17mths) with the 9yr old in charge. The other day at the local park the woman shouted at the 9yr old "if you come back before 5pm i'll smack your f*ucking head in" this was at 12 noon and the girl was at the park with her 17mth old sister. It was a cold day and had started drizzling, the little girl had a summer dress on and a very full and dirty nappy. She had bruises all over her and just cried the whole time I was there (till 2pm). The 9yr old was doing her best to look after her sister but she kept running off to play with some other girls leaving this toddler alone in the park. I watched her and this toddler was shivering and cold, I nearly took her back home with me but don't want to get into trouble myself. I talked to the 9yr old and found out where she lives, i'm reporting them in the morning. Would you do the same thing??

It's a difficult one but to be honest I think I would.

pedilia · 31/08/2006 21:14

whoopsfallenoveragain · 31/08/2006 21:14

zoeuk1 · 31/08/2006 21:19

definately. its beyond me how a 'mother' could treat her children like that!

calebsmum · 31/08/2006 21:21

thanks feel better knowing others would report it as well! Been thinking of that little girl all day as my ds is the same age.

Yes, I definitly would. Chances are they are already known to SS.

Fubsy · 31/08/2006 21:23

Absolutely. I've done it - you can remain anonymous, and it doesn't sound as if they would know you anyway. Good luck!

zoeuk1 · 31/08/2006 21:23

seeing something like that would really really upset me too. you'd be doing the right thing to report it.

Scoobydooooo · 31/08/2006 21:24

I would defo report, its the kids you need to think about & you are doing the right thing for them

Mum2FunkyDude · 31/08/2006 21:25

Terrible...I hope you can help make a difference in their lives by pointing it out...poor kids.

CountTo10 · 31/08/2006 21:26

I would and have. You can do it anon etc if you're worried about that side of things. I think you have to - how else are these kids going to get picked up on the radar?

MrsApronstrings · 31/08/2006 21:26

yes i think i would - and well done

StinkyPete · 31/08/2006 21:27

i would def try. tho tbh i've tried before and had a v negative response about being anon. they were pretty much saying if i didn't have the familys consent!!! wtf - as if i'd go and ask that mum.
i know what you mean about it staying on your mind too, poor little mites
let us know what kind of response you get if you can...

LaDiDaDi · 31/08/2006 21:29

Definitely do it.

tiredemma · 31/08/2006 21:35

Ive done it- but they did ask for my name, although they did stipulate that this would not be relayed to animal that i was reporting.

Id do it again- especially concerning the horror that you have just described, although i wouldnt hold much faith in SS as the child I was concerned about is still living in the same hell as she was a year ago.

oh and you have to really stipualte what your concerns are - you cant just say " ithink so and so is abusing their child"- you would have to say exactly what you saw.

edam · 31/08/2006 21:39

That's awful. Think you are doing the right thing.

Yes, I would report any child I was concerned for, I have reported my own sister in the past, she was neglecting her daughter and I hoped the visit from SS would make her look at her parenting skills, thankfully it did, though our relationship is'nt much to write home about since, but I dont regret it, I did what had to be done.

dinny · 31/08/2006 21:54

oh, yes, I would straight away. please do it and get these children help as soon as you can.

waterfalls · 31/08/2006 22:02

Though she has done something recently that bothers me a bit, might start a thread for some advice.

MatNanPlus · 31/08/2006 22:04

Definately, they may well be known and if they arn't it really sounds like they should be.

madhouse2 · 31/08/2006 22:21

definatly if the the mother can treat her kids like that in public just imagine what might be going on behind closed doors
