Post natal check at GP Surgery

Hello all,

Me and DS have got our joint hour long appointment tomorrow at the GP surgery for our post natal check.

I can kind of guess what checks they will do on DS but what sort of things will they check with me???

Is a physical examination involved?
Or is it just questions about how I'm coping?

I had a C-S so a bit different, but they asked lots of Qs about how I was feeling/coping and checked if my scar was healing properly. I think contraception was mentioned too.

My GP offered to check my stitches (and I accepted for reassurance as too scared to look myself). Asked how I was feeling. Can't remember what else. Certainly wasn't an hour even after we'd been across to nurse for DD's injections - our appointment was after 8 weeks so first lot were due.

I had a CS too which was why I wondered if a physical examination was done. My DS will be 9 weeks at he check and will be having his jabs at the same time, I'm pretty sure the GP does them as part of the appointment. The letter says I should expect the appointment to last up to an hour but I can't imagine why. Mind you, I suppose they have to set standard length appointment to accommodate having enough time to spend with women where there are problems.

I had bp done, blood taken. Contraception discussed. More time spent talking about me than actually physical checks but my section wound was healing fine. More time was spent checking baby.

KatyN · 22/05/2014 13:17

contraception. that was pretty much all we talked about and at that point there was NO NEED.

I probably should have used the appointment to mention what turned out to be a prolapse but at the time I thought it was normal.

Writerwannabe83 · 22/05/2014 13:28

Oh the good old contraception chat - I don't know why I hadn't thought of that.

I had the Mirena Coil before TTC and it is my intention to have another one put in but I can't say it's something that is at the forefront of my mind. Do new parents really find time and the energy for sex? Grin

My GP didn't check me at all, even after I said how painful my stitches were. She just wittered on about contraception, I said 'did you just listen to me?? I said I am in a lot of pain down there. I do not need contraception advice right now, that is the last thing I will be doing for a long time'. All I got was 'yes but you will go back to it at some point'

CMOTDibbler · 22/05/2014 13:32

Mine was the biggest anticlimax ever. All that I got asked was about what contraception I was going to use, which I'd already organised (Mirena coil fitted at 12 weeks). No exam, bp or anything

LoblollyBoy · 22/05/2014 13:36

We discussed contraception before leaving the hospital. I had heard some in depth chats happening in other bays, so I was quite pleased when the nurse accepted my plan to just not have sex and signed me out.

Writerwannabe83 · 22/05/2014 13:38

My DH was asking me the other day when we could start having sex again.

I told him never Grin

Our triple appointment (twins) was 30 minutes. I very much doubt it will take an hour.

With me the GP...
Asked about contraception
Asked how I was feeling
Had a quick look at my CS scar.

That's it!

Writerwannabe83 · 23/05/2014 14:29

I was in there for a good 45 minutes Smile

She was very eager to talk about contraception and I said I would probably have another Mirena Coil. When I got home, not even 15 minutes later, I had a voicemail on my phone from the Practice Nurse asking me to call her back to arrange an appointment to have a coil put in Shock

It all feels a but rushed and pressurised as to be honest, sex is the absolute last thing on my mind anyway!!
