Jewellery on a baby

I guess this is down to personnal choice but what do you think about a baby wearing jewellery.

My daughter will be 1 next week and my Gran has bought her a very simple gold bracelet. I am not really sure what I think but my husband is horrified at it and is very against her wearing it. He says he thinks it looks cheap and tacky to put any jewellery on a baby. I agree with him to a point but a little bit of me thinks the braclet is harmless and looks quite pretty on her.

I guess the simple solution is for me to only put it on her when she is in the company of my Gran but it got me thinking about what people think of seeing jewellery on a baby.

I agree it is cultural but personally I think it is guilding the lilly and therefore unneccesary, and a bracelet could get caught and is a bit of a safety issue.
Put it on when granny comes round and leave it at that.

katierocket · 23/03/2004 18:36

don't like it. sorry. babies are gorgeous enough without any adornments.

Hulababy · 23/03/2004 18:38

Personally I don't like jewellry (any of it - earings, bracelets, necklaces, etc) on babies and young children.

I think there is a safety issue to an extent too - might get caught when playing.

DD is now 23 months and is just getting itno girly stuff big style. So she now has play jewellry but still isn't allowed to wear it outside of the house.

I would go with the option of just wearing it when GRan is round, or explaining to Gran you want to keep it safe and as a memento for DD when she is older. You don't want to risk it getting spoilt by everyday wear, etc.

I agree its personal and cultural choice but my feeling is that babies look awful in jewellery. Could you tell your gran that instead of putting it on her, you're keeping it safe for when she gets bigger?
What really makes my toes curl are earrings. I refer you to the first girl baby in the Tikkabilla title sequence with the pink dress and earrings.
And don't get me started on baby perfumes ...

jampot · 23/03/2004 18:41

I think it's horrid to see babies with their ears pierced and with any other kind of jewellery. As Katierocket says they are lovely enough as they are.

marthamoo · 23/03/2004 18:42

They make baby perfumes?

suzywong · 23/03/2004 18:42

Oh good, gloves off now
It is the naffest thing I can think of. Especially earrings, it's just vile

marthamoo · 23/03/2004 18:43

I think it out to be illegal to pierce babies' ears - it's something that ought to be a personal decision later in life. Hate jewellery on babies and hate toddler boys with gelled up hair

marthamoo · 23/03/2004 18:43

ought not out!

WideWebWitch · 23/03/2004 18:44

Think it looks awful, I'd go with tellign granny you're keeping it for when she's older.

Angeliz · 23/03/2004 18:45

I don't like it either!
I think it looks awful and think piercings should not be allowed in babies...Awful!

My sis in law gave me a Christening bangle when dd was 2,(we had her Christened late), i love it but just took it for granted that it was a keepsake, wouldn't dream of her wearing it.
I think if you do put it on your dd you'll be asking for trouble as Gran will get her more and before you know it she'll be looking like Madonna!

Only joking

Good luck with whatever you do!+

marthamoo · 23/03/2004 18:46

Did you see that episode of Friends where Rachel's sister looks after the baby for the day and gets her ears pierced? By the end of the episode they are all friends again. If anyone put holes in my baby's ears I would tear thenm limb from limb

Angeliz · 23/03/2004 18:48

Yep that's what i said Marthamoo, "THAT is why i don't let my sister look after dd!!!"

lotty34 · 23/03/2004 18:49

Right its going back in the box and she will not wear it again, even in the company of Gran. She will proberly forget she has bought it anyway

Earings on a child are horrible and there is no way I would ever put any other jewellery on her.

I was thinking more along the lines of not liking it but now I know people think it looks tacky it will be back in the box and put away.

Thanks.

lou33 · 23/03/2004 18:52

jampot · 23/03/2004 18:54

Has anyone been onto the www.chavscum.co.uk website? You can even name your baby!!!!

dd would be Bianca Dawn .....
and ds would be Storm Gary .....

forestfly · 23/03/2004 18:54

Not really lou no

kiwisbird · 23/03/2004 18:56

no not a great lover of it, hate piercings on young ones too. Sometimes a solid silver bangle round the wrist can look sweet for photos and dare I say it for granny visits...
I am getting my daughter a charm bracelet, but not to wear, a keepsake for when she is older.

lou33 · 23/03/2004 18:57

Mine were Candice Janine and Dean Jordan.

BadHair · 23/03/2004 18:57

Yup, Marthamoo, baby perfumes are on the market. I think Channel do one. I mean, have these people never smelt a freshly bathed baby? Why on earth would anyone want to slather them in stinky perfume?
Having said that it might come in useful when they've got a whiffy nappy and you can't change it till you get home.

lou33 · 23/03/2004 18:59

That site is really funny. i like the clebrity chavs.

forestfly · 23/03/2004 19:00

Gary Elvis And Britney Janine, what a coincidence

BadHair · 23/03/2004 19:01

Ha ha, chavscum is great! Ds1 is apparently Storm Jordan. I swear my next door neighbour is on the chav of the month page.

forestfly · 23/03/2004 19:04

It doesn't use the word Schemey, odd
