Jewellery on a baby

I guess this is down to personnal choice but what do you think about a baby wearing jewellery.

My daughter will be 1 next week and my Gran has bought her a very simple gold bracelet. I am not really sure what I think but my husband is horrified at it and is very against her wearing it. He says he thinks it looks cheap and tacky to put any jewellery on a baby. I agree with him to a point but a little bit of me thinks the braclet is harmless and looks quite pretty on her.

I guess the simple solution is for me to only put it on her when she is in the company of my Gran but it got me thinking about what people think of seeing jewellery on a baby.

'Round here, they are known as 'Pikeys'

lydialemon · 24/03/2004 12:37

jampot/hulababy didn't say it was racist, I just said it made me feel the same way although calling people pikeys IS, as travellers/gypsys whatever are a separate ethnic group (unless I've got that completely confused) I just felt that site was unnecessary, sanctamonious and rather nasty - but that is just MY opinion.

Twinkie · 24/03/2004 12:41

Goodness my puter won't even let me access it - it says it is Racist!!

What are you lot like??? This is a really horrible website...

lydialemon · 24/03/2004 13:15

Afternoon dinosaur, glad I'm not the only one! I'd give up, I don't think anyone cares.....

CountessDracula · 24/03/2004 13:17

what is a chav then/

nutcracker · 24/03/2004 13:18

I got the same name for a boy and girl.

dinosaur · 24/03/2004 13:18

I agreed with your post last night, then I looked at the website itself just now and found it pretty horrible. Just the name of it says it all - how can it be right to categorise people as "scum"????!!!!

lydialemon · 24/03/2004 13:28

I'm going to repeat myself I'm afraid.

IT IS NASTY, NASTY, NASTY.

Hulababy · 24/03/2004 13:36

I agree calling someone scum is unpleasant yes - the web address I gather you mean (hadn't read it. Did you never have a name at school for different groups of people - because of their fashion/music? At the school I went to people even called themselves things like Townies, with Heavies/Sweaties being the opposite.

I still think the baby naming bit is quite funny though, as was the one where we could choose elfin/hobbit names.

oliveoil · 24/03/2004 13:38

I stomped and huffed to have my ears pierced and my mum relented when I was 12 and I fainted in the supermarket about 5 mins later. She still smirks about it now.

Did anyone see the article on the girl who had 3 babies by 3 dads at 17? Her kids names were hilarious. She was called Courtney however.

lydialemon · 24/03/2004 13:43

I'm sorry but I think that site crosses the line. It's not trying to be light hearted or funny (like Wayne and waynetta slobb for example) its just being insulting, rude and catty (trying to avoid using the word nasty yet again!)

jampot · 24/03/2004 15:01

Sorry - been at work for a couple of hours.

At my school, we had punks, rockers, mods, new romantics, etc - just a name for a group of people.

How exactly is it different from Wayne & Waynetta Slob - do they not epitomise everyone's image of "slob" from their dress to their behaviour/language?

I agree that the word "scum" in the address title is a horrid word but it doesn't indicate that the people are scum.

dinosaur · 24/03/2004 15:07

Have you read the website though? Sounds to me like whoever wrote it does think that the people he/she describes as chavs ARE scum.

It's completely different to being punks, rockers, mods, casuals or whatever - those are all names and tribes that people ADOPT by choice.

misdee · 24/03/2004 15:07

getting back to the bangle thing, u could just say your dd takes it off. my 2 dd have bagles which they got when they were born but dont wear them as they just remove them and they get lost. I ust keep them as momentos and the memories of when they were tiny.

forestfly · 24/03/2004 15:09

Isn't it just a joke, i joke about single mothers chain smoking and slapping there kids. But i am one.

jampot · 24/03/2004 15:11

tbh I haven't read the entire site - I looked at the baby naming bit and the celebrities and the "uniform" and my pal filled me in on the rest before I went on it. I'll look in a bit!

forestfly · 24/03/2004 15:11

I was a Crusty, apparently

dinosaur · 24/03/2004 15:18

Did you listen to the Levellers, ff?

forestfly · 24/03/2004 15:19

I went to see them five times

jampot · 24/03/2004 15:20

What's a crusty?

dinosaur · 24/03/2004 15:22

My sis was a big levellers fan too. I went to see them once with her, in a field somewhere - can't for the life of me remember where now! She had some clogs as well.

forestfly · 24/03/2004 15:23

It involve: dreadlocks, piercings, buses, and not selling out (sometimes with the occasional rat thrown in)

forestfly · 24/03/2004 15:23

Oh and Music in Fields
