Mild constipation with breastfeeding?

Hi ladies
Has anyone else experienced mild-ish constipation whilst breastfeeding? My DS is 12 weeks and has been totally breastfed. I was on medication for high blood pressure until a couple of weeks back (had pre-eclampsia and lingering hypertension) and I thought it was the pills making me a bit 'bunged up' as my mum would say. But I've been off the pills long enough now and it's not really improved.

I eat fairy healthily - although I would admit room for improvement and a few fewer cakes! - and I try and drink plenty. Just wondered whether it might be hungry baby making me dehydrated with then the obvious outcome?

Sorry - not the best chat!

JJJ - she is worried she has constipation, not the baby :) :)

Marmite there is no known direct connection between constipation and breastfeeding. But constipation is soooooooooooo common anyway. The usual helps ie more fibre, more fluid, and a few prunes with your breakfast are great too :)

Me, I'll admit it! It is dehydrating and it helps to look after yourself. Sneak some extra fibre, (I've been having grapefruit for breakfast as well as toast of cereal) and lots of water. Train your nearest and dearest to bring you a pint glass of it if they see you sat feeding. It's one of those things people don't talk about, but happens:)

Breastfeeding certainly makes you feel thirstier in the early days....and yes, water will help with that Grin

God I hate prunes!! Reminds me of when I was pregnant with DS1!! Thanks ladies. Will drink (even) more water an try and eat more spinach.

Baby is definitely not constipated ...

Just drink more, and try to up your fibre intake.

Also, if you have been a bit bunged up, you might need a couple of days of really high fibre to get everything back to normal, and then you'll be OK on your normal diet.

Well I really notice I pee so little when bf maybe twice a day even though I drink water by the pint so I'd say by the same token it could lead to constipation.
