Sun hat recommendations for 18 month old DS?

Last summer DS had a sun hat that would not stay on, it didn't seem to pull down very far. DS is likely to be outside a fair amount this summer (weather permitting!) now that he is older. Has anyone found a sun hat that stays put? Thanks in advance!

We just had one with a brim from mothercare. At 18 they tend not to have a strap. Last summer (21 months) we had a rule that if he wanted to play outside he had to wear his hat. If he didn't he'd have to come inside. He's ginger, so we had to be strict & it worked.

Only those that fasten under the chin - and even then they're off and tossed aside within ten mins Hmm
TBH I don't bother anymore...

My DD had a gorgeous one bought for her from Jojo Maman Bebe and that seemed to stay put. It fit well and I'm sure they have boy designs - I think they're a bit pricey though.

With winter hats, I found my toddler was more likely to keep on a hat she'd chosen from the shops herself so I'm going to try that with her sun hat too this year.

DS2 16m just has a fishermans hat from mothercare which he pulls off within seconds Hmm He's not got a very thick head of hair so I'm going to go with suncreaming his scalp and keep putting it back on when I catch it.

John lewis have girls ones with a chin strap age 1-2 so they might have a boys version.

rootypig · 27/04/2014 22:15

JoJoMaman have boys' ones with straps eg www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/sp+nautical-stripe-sun-hat-in-baby-sun-hats-and-sunglasses+b8331

DS's hat has a velcro strap which he undoes with ease.

Thank you for your replies, will have a look at those links. Sounds like a strap is the answer!

H&m do cheap toddler sun hats with straps too.

ZebraZeebra · 29/04/2014 07:49

Could you stitch on a strap - just something you could tie easily or add a velcro attachment? DS is also 18 months, pulls most things off his head in disgust but I've been sticking a baseball cap on this Spring to try and get him used to it. Wishful thinking, I suspect!

BikeRunSki · 29/04/2014 07:52

I just sewed ribbons to use as straps onto any sunhat.

Having serif that, ds has a fantastic sunhat from Toby Tiger which sits deep on his head and has a strap.

ClubName · 29/04/2014 07:57

IMO the main thing is that you need to be stronger willed than them. Every single time it comes off it goes back on. It will take a while but eventually they will just accept that they have to wear it, provided you do it every time and they never "win" Grin

My ginger 11 & 13 yo never go anywhere in summer without a hat. For them now it's just routine, like putting their shoes on.

rootypig · 29/04/2014 08:51

That is definitely the answer ClubName. The strap helps delay them getting it off, and sort of reinforces the idea that it should stay on (it will also prevent it falling or blowing off). But you do have to keep just putting it back on. It's exhausting, DD gets SO cross and so do I.

JuniperTisane · 29/04/2014 08:56

Actually thinking about it DS2 throws of most hats in disgust but if you pass him the dressing up hardhat or policemans helmet he is fascinated and parades round in them for ages Grin

DD is so anti hat that she screams and cries if you put one on her DOLL, ffs. Confused

Super cute DS Juniper Smile

DS has very pale skin and is mostly bald still despite being 18 months so a hat is a must.

Hadn't heard of Toby Tiger before - they have some nice things, thanks for the suggestion!
