Time out help...

DS is 18 months and has been going through a biting stage. Nursery, and DH and I have worked hard over the past 3/4 months to get him to stop doing this. Nursery started putting him in time out (removing him from the situation, explaining why it was wrong, making him sit quietly for a minute or so. DS will then say sorry, and will have a kiss and a cuddle to make up). We've been doing the same at home, and we thought we'd cracked it. Tonight however, Ds bit me while I was settling him for bed. I'm not excusing it, but I think he did it as he didn't nap at all today (not for lack of trying on our part!) so I think it was because he was so tired. I did do the time out, and afterwards Ds went to bed with lots of kisses and cuddles. I'm not sure if I should have just let it go though, and just put him to bed instead? He hasn't bit for the past few weeks, which is why I think being tired was causing it. Would I have been better just to put him to bed instead, or did I do the right thing carrying on?

18 months is very young for time out. Dont think we used it until around the age of 3

To be honest we only started doing it as nursery were, and we wanted to be consistence. It's been working well, apart from the timing of it tonight...

Too young. Explaining - they will not understand.

They and you need to keep a close eye and try and prevent. Mine did bite but not for long. We did a stern "no" and walked away.

If nursery are using it then I think you are right to mirror at home otherwise it will be ineffectual for both of you. He is young, but if you have seen a marked improvement then he has obviously understood and taken it on board.

I think you are probably right that he was over tired and slipped up but you were also right to continue with the routine of time out etc otherwise he will think it is ok to be naughty when he is tired.

I think you did the right thing, of only for consistency. We've been doing timeout with our DD since a similar age and now at the age of 3 she hardly ever has one. She's very good at taking the warnings.
I honestly think that kids understand a lot more then we think at this age. I'm not saying they fully get it but they understand enough that certain behaviours will have certain consequences.
Also you said it's been working and the biting is lessening, I would let that guide you as to whether you should continue with it. Each child is different and of yours is responding then I'd go with it.
Also one final thought is that it is obviously a strategy the nursery use that they know to work else they wouldn't continue using with the children in their care.
Anyway hope you do whatever works best for you and your DS.
