What 'routine' does a 12 month old have?

I'm looking for a childminder for dd2 to stay with 2 mornings per week whilst I study at home. She's almost 1. I'm going to visit a childminder this afternoon and I'm sure she'll ask me about the baby's routine.

At the moment we don't have much of one. Yes, she has a morning nap but the timing of this is variable. Ditto to her having a snack and milk and lunch.

Now I know I am going to sound like an idiot here butI would like to give the cm some idea of when to give her a nap and food and drinks.

It seems dd2 is on that cusp of change. I'm about to completely finish breastfeeding so ought she to have a bottle/cup of milk sometime before breakfast and lunch?

Will she soon be merging her 2 daytime naps into one or does that happen later? I'll be leaving her from 8:30 - 12:30 so if she's going to drop the morning sleep soon, I'd rather start her off at the childminder that way. So, I could get the cm to give her an early lunch and I could put dd2 straight down for a nap when I get home at 12:40pm.

I'm sure I'll work it out well enough if no-one responds. I'm just curious as to what most other babies are doing at 12 months. Don't ask me to remember what dd1 was doing at that age.

hmmm ok
ds is a couple of weeks past 12months...so...

he has 'fallen' into this routine himself...
10.15am - wakes, breakfast of weetabix and milk, plus small bottle milk
may possibly have a 15-20 min nap at some point in the morning, but not usually.
1pm heads off to nursery and is given lunch
3-4 - nap
on waking - has 'Tea'
6pm collected from nursery
often has another hour long nap at some point between 6.15 and 8pm
9.15pm Nighttime bottle of milk
10pm Into bed, story
10.15pm sleeping (?)

they seem to vary so much at this age. ds (15mo) was - at that stage - transitioning to 1 nap from 2 - and now is well established in that. i took my lead from him - he just wasn't getting tired enough for a 2nd nap in the afternoon, so i kept him going a bit in the mornings and let him just have the one.

but some of his friends are still on 2 naps now.

FWIW, our day (very roughly) looks like this:-
6ish - wakes
7:30 - breakfast
9:30 - snack
11:30 - lunch
12:30 - sleep (anything from 1 to 3 hours)
afternoon - out and about, wearing him out!
2:30ish - snack
5:30 - tea
6:30 - bath
bed between 7 and 7:45

same as Malory for dd1

dd2 is a law unto herself but I aim for a nap at 1pm for about an hour or so after her lunch

beatie, before I saw this was you I was thinking - DD doesn't have a routine. She does something different every day, although I think I can see some slight predictability happening.

She and DS will be starting at a childminder in a few weeks time, and her lack of routine hasn't been a problem at nursery.

(btw it's PiccadillyCircus in a new version ).

BrookeandTaylorsmummy · 23/08/2006 13:47

My dd had the following routine (ish- give or take hour or so!!)

Wakes 7:30
Cuddle with mummy ahhh!!
Breakfast 8:30 then gets washed and dressed
Plays
Nap about 10:30
Wakes cuddles then Snack 11:30
Might go for a walk
Lunch 1:30-2:00
Nap 3:30
Wakes cuddles fruit snack 4:30
Tea bath and bed for 7:30-8:00

She's now 20.5 months and not much has changed except she now feeds, plays and helps me clean up ds 6.5 months!!!
Not sure if this helps??

p.s all goes out the window when shes teething!

dizietsma · 23/08/2006 17:28

My routine is flexible.

Three hours after waking DD has a nap, length varies from the maddeningly short 30 minutes to the blissful 90 minutes and I have no way of knowing how long!

Wakes and is given milk.

Lunch between 12 and 1.

Three hours after last nap ended another nap, again of indeterminate length.

Wakes and is given milk, perhaps a snack if dinner wont be for a bit.

Between 5.30 and 7 dinner.

Bed by 8pm.

Thanks everyone.

I went to see the childminder but it didn't feel right so I've made an appointment to see another one next week. That gives me a bit more time to make up a routine

I'm looking forward to dd2 moving into that one long nap per day phase as it will be nice to put her down in the afternoon and then spend sometime alone with dd1 when she gets back from Pre-school.

Oh, who am I kidding. DD1 will end up playing alone and I'll end up on here

My DD (17 months) went from 2 to one sleeps at almost exactly a year.
Wake at 7:30/8am. Nap at 11ish for two to three hours. Bed at 6:30pm.
