Introducing a new language

DH & I want to introduce another languge to the Boys. They wouldn't be taught other languages through school for several yrs. We'd like to start this at home before school.

Did you buy DVD's or CD's off the internet or at a bookstore?

Take it this is a language not spoken at home or in your environment - basically a first foreign language?

I get Russian things sent over from Russia because there is practically nothing in the shops here/can't judge what is on offer over the internet. DVDs in English I sometimes buy via Amazon. Mostly get DVDs, CDs, books sent over or get them myself at Christmastime.

Which language do you have in mind?

For what purpose?

If you're going to send dc to a class or have a tutor for them, I'd ask the teacher for recommendations. If you're going to be teaching them yourself, I find DVDs that they know in one language and then watch in the language they're learning quite useful. Is satellite TV an option for you?

Just bumping this along for you till you hear about other people's experiences.

Where I live there are a couple of institutes which offer activities in foreign languages - baking in French, painting in Spanish, guitar in Italian which I think is quite nice if you can afford it.

My cousin sent her dd to French lessons (very playful I think) from the age of 3 and she loved those. If you then holiday in a country where the language is spoken, dc could pick it up fairly quickly.

Let us know how you get on.
