Changing teat size at 8 weeks?

My 8 week old DS is on tommee tippee bottles with teat size 1 but has recently started falling asleep mid feed or becoming agitated half way through and wriggling a lot and taking less milk. I thought it might be time to move to teat size 2 but he suffers from reflux and i'm very anxious not to make that worse. He has gaviscon in his bottles. I tried one teat size 2 earlier and he was gulping and then when i burped him he was a sick - it was only a small amount but he wasn't happy. He carried on gulping the milk and was very noisy and i then switched the teat back to size 1 for fear of bringing on his reflux.

Is it normal for babies to gulp/be sick on the first few bottles on bigger teat size or have i tried to move him up too soon? He is just over 8 weeks and will eat 4 oz on teat size 1 every 3 hours when he is willing to have the whole bottle (other times he stops after 2 or 3 oz). He is 11 lb.

Any advice much appreciated as i'm very confused! Thanks.

Hello

I had the exact same issue!

My dd had gaviscon in her milk for silent reflux, and the teats were constantly collapsing.

I moved her onto 3 months + teat at around 6 weeks.

The first few feeds she did seem to be gulping it. I fed her upright and that seemed to help

Thanks for your reply - i do feed him very upright already as HV said that would help with the reflux. It's a tough one isn't it - i think my fear of seeing him have another reflux episode where he screams inconsolably is stopping me from moving him up! He collapses the size 1 teats constantly.

How many days did it take your DD to get used to the new teat?

If the teats are collapsing, then he needs the next size up

Gaviscon makes the milk slightly thicker, so its hard to get the milk through a 0+ month teat.

My dd is 18 months now, but i do remember it took around about a week for her to be used to the flow of a 3+ month teat.

Let your baby suck for around 10 seconds, then stop for a few seconds and start again. This will help your baby to take a breather if the milk is too fast.

Thank you for the advice! I will try him again on the size 2 on the next feed.
