Newborn Vomiting /spit up

Hi All

Nervy first time mother with a lovely 2 week old baby boy who seems to be vomiting a lot to me. DS is EBF and sometimes it seems to be his entire feed that he's bringing up after his feed and at the same time he has a red face/ high pitched cry/ arches his back and raises up his legs.

The midwife has been happy with him so far, he has been breast feeding well (some days hour long mega feeds every 3-5hours and some days it's more like several snack feeds in one hour). He is 5oz over his birth weight and produces lots of wet and nappies.

Im still worried he's in pain, I'm not winding him properly, I'm over producing milk or it's flowing too quickly into his mouth or in some way I'm making him miserable.

Does anyone have any ideas if this is something I should worry about, if so what it might be and what I could do differently?

Thanks v much in advance

Congrats on your newborn MesM!

Sounds fairly normal to me. It won't be his whole feed, it just looks like it sometimes. If he's gaining weight with plenty of wet nappies then he's feeding well. Doesn't stop him having some reflux, but don't jump straight down that path, this may all be within normal.

Have you come across the kellymom site yet? The link is to the reflux page, but it's the best bf resource site out there IME.

Hope it gets easier soon.

Theyaremysunshine that's so helpful thank you (everything is new to me so so easy to worry). I'll explore the Kellymom site just from a quick click it's got some really useful links. Thanks v much again.

My daughter was very like this. the doc said that the back arching was common in refluxy babies. after months I figured out my daughter was allergic to cows milk proteins. I am breastfeeding too so I had to cut dairy out of my diet. within a few days of stopping dairy there was a huge improvement in the amount she vomited. now she only vomits when we are doing dairy challenges trying to build up her tolerance to dairy. She has been on reflux meds since 6 weeks. the reflux for my daughter is a symptom of the allergy. the meds stopped her being in pain but didn't stop the actual vomiting. It could be worth you cutting out dairy for 2 weeks to see if it helps. It can take 2 weeks for the proteins to leave your system apparently.

I share mrspatpat experience. I cut out dairy at 5 weeks & noticed vast improvement in baby after 48 hours:) was still refluxy which she grew out of at 5 months, but the screaming & arching & awful nappies ceased:)

Congratulations MesM! Sounds very much like my DD (8mo) who was very very sicky until she was about 3 months old and until fairly recently would regularly vom up all over me two or three times a week. She has followed the 98th centile curve more or less consistently and has pretty much grown out of it now. If, as you say, nappies are wet, growth is steady, etc, sounds like you have nothing to worry about. Just lots of washing to do!
