Using products on your baby.

During our antenatal classes we were advised not to use products on a new baby and let the skins natural protective oils do their job.

We have been washing DS and his hair in plain water but I'd love to give him a proper bath and get some shampoo on him.

What age was your child when you started using products?

DS is almost 4 weeks old.

I have never used soap on my babies skin who are now 18 months. We use Organic Babies shampoo on their hair once a week. I think we first washed their hair at 10 weeks.

I don't use soap on dds body or face but as she was born with loads of hair I wash it every other day.
probably best to get them used to it sooner rather than later too.
burts bees baby shampoo is ultra gentle, smells like honey and you only need a tiny blob.

I'm like you vichill - DS was born with lots of beautiful blonde hair, but now that it hasn't been properly washed yet it just looks dirty and greasy.

I wouldn't use soap on DS's skin but is bubble bath for babies ok to use at his age??

We started at about 8 weeks when she had a bout of vomiting that you could still smell after a water bath. I'd advise not to use Johnsons shampoo though, as soon as we started using it she developed horrific cradle cap that has taken months to clear.

doorbellringer · 15/04/2014 19:37

Well in the hospital for his first bath the mw used Johnson's all in one wash, I had section so she did it for me.

Prob never used anything for first couple of weeks then used Simple bubble bath. Ds had a mop of black curly hair that needed washed to stop it looking lank & greasy. Never caused us any problems. No skin probs or cradle cap ever!

TheScience · 15/04/2014 19:39

Didn't use anything until ds1 was about 15 months I think. Still only shampoo his hair occasionally.

I've never bothered with bubble bath. think its more for the mums benefit of having a lovely powdery smelling baby. Their skin is quite sensitive and so I'd avoid cheap perfumed stuff.

used johnsons all over wash almost straight away to rid of the old blood in hes hair.
Then after about 3 weeks started using little me organic moisture bath.
I read that water is very drying anyway but I dont know how true that is.

8 months at least. not until they start getting dirty.
