I let my 6 year old wash his own hair today....

He's used a whole bottle of coconut smelling shampoo on it, got it in his eyes and needed help washing it out.
So it was like I washed it anyway, but a few more steps added at the start.

tips are welcome for next time.

My tip would be to pour the the shampoo for him or decant it into a pump bottle so there is better quantity control!

Like vajazzler suggested, we've decanted the no tears ( who are they kidding?!) stuff in to a pump bottle.
The kids only wash their own hair when in the shower (when they're in the bath, we do it for them because we use a big, heavy jug to rinse) and we tell them to stick their tummies out, keep their eyes closed and have their heads tilted right back (sticking tummies out helps with this).
Like with tooth brushing, they get the hang eventually.

Sore subject in this house, He doesn't like toothbrushing, we have to practically corner him and do it for him.

Oh yes of course, telling him to use less, that never crossed my mind.
"Use less" what absolute genius, all this time, the problem was that i never thought to tell him to use less.
How much less, i guess we shall never know, because it's not specified, just less.
See, my problem was I told him, "use a whole bottle of shampoo, whinge for me to help you because it gets in your eyes and then spend 4 days smelling like a coconut."

Well he'll get the hang of it eventually if you let him do it himself and quit babying him.
Unlike tooth brushing it doesn't actually matter that much and won't cost you $1000's in orthodontic bills if he messes up.
If you are that precious about the wee darling then dollop it on for him but he will never learn that way.

I did, you are right, i asked for tips, i didn't ask for someone to tell me something that i am clearly already doing.... TWICE.

Whereas i asked my 9yo old to wash his hair and returned home to find out he'd washed it in water only. You'd think he'd realise that wasn't going to get the mud out of his hair

I'm not sure if you that’s incredibly stupid or clever, he did what you said but still didn’t get clean, you may just have a genius in the making.

I despair sometime. The boy thinks swimming counts as having a wash. How did i manage to produce someone so averse to cleanliness???

Tip for next time. Dont give him the whole bottle. A blob in his hand and let him get on with it.

I would have said 6 was a bit young but obviously not as someone's 3yr old washed their own hair!
My boys are older now 12& 16 so hopefully they can manage although on more than one occasion in sure they just wet it.

The dd's are 8 & 4 and I wash their hair. Dd1 has long thick wavy hair and I doubt she could wash out the bubbles on her own and dd2 has thick very curly hair and no way could she do it in her own.

His hair is pretty long. i might just give him some and let him "rub it in" rather than doing the whole wash himself.

My 6 year old has long hair, I also put his shampoo in a pump dispenser tell him to press twice and then he lathers and rinses fine. We have had a few soap in eye incidents but he's pretty much got the hang of it now.

The pump dispenser seems the thing to do. I will update the thread when i try it.
