Horrendous early morning nappy leaks

My 24m old used to go about 3-4x a day - but it's recently reduced in frequency but massively upped in volume.

The problem is that it usually happens whilst he's still in bed, on top of a nappy that's already pretty saturated with a full night of pee. And I think he then tends to do a big pee straight afterwards, which of course isn't absorbed at all once the nappy is full of his mega-poo.

• So virtually every morning I'm going in to find poo and/or pee soaked PJs, sleepbag, fitted sheet and sometimes the mattress cover too . I'm completely fed up of the constant washing and it can be a real struggle to make sure he's got something dry & clean for the next night.

I've moved him up to size 6's overnight which is marginally better than size 5, but still doesn't do the trick. (He has fairly chubby thighs and whilst not fat is generally of stocky build). Tried Pampers and Sainsburys.

Any suggestions? (Toilet training is the only one I can think of, but I really don't think he's ready yet...)

And yes - I do try to rush in on first waking before all this happens - but given he virtually never sleeps beyond 6am (whatever the bedtime), that is sometimes a struggle!

I don't think toilet training will help OP. He can't concentrate his wee yet at night so it would just make everyone cross.

We went through this stage for a few weeks and DS naturally tended to a later time thank goodness. Just a matter of riding it out for us.

Have you considered putting the next size up pullup over the top of the nappy? Use kids pyjama pants sizes if need be. Also, for us, his pjs were pulling the nappy down a bit and causing leaks.

Or use a reusable nappy cover, one of the waterproof type things.

Or you could try a quick change before you go to bed. No wipes just literally change the nappy in the cot with as little fuss as possible. DS had always done the main wetting in the first few hours.

If it helps, DS went from this to dry day and night within a few months with remarkably little fuss.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of pyjama pants and he's already in the largest size nappy. Definitely worth a shot!

Does he sleep through OP? You could try cutting down liquids 1-2 hours before bedtime, and when he is toilet trained, going for a wee right before bed.

Was going to suggest changing nappy during the night, dd had a few mornings of this but changing nappy during the night regardless of whether or not it was needed stopped any leaks. She's only 3 months though!

He's 2..how much liquid is he having before bed?

I would second changing him before you go to bed - just do it in his bed.

I know the volume is less but DD(3 months) is a massively heavy wetter at night and the nappies that fit her don't contain it, even if I change her at 11 before her last feed she can fill it to bursting by the time she wakes at 5 or 6, although with a few night feeds in between. And changing her in the middle of the night just wakes her up.

I switched to really absorbent bamboo washable nappies (bamboozles) with the super boosters from the nappy lady and haven't had any problems since then.

Have you tried changing his nappy before you go to bed? My DD went through a phase of soaking nappies so we used to change her at about 11pm. Also to maybe contain the mess a bit more what about putting on some sort of nappy cover when he goes to bed? A bit like the ones they use for swimming?
