Alternatives to time out

Have put 3yr old in time out trice this morning - yelling at bro so he cried(wouldn't stop) and deliberately distracting baby when having bottle (piling toys on us etc) I gave warnings but he wouldn't stop .feeling so strewed by it sll

Withdrawing your attention is absolutely the correct way to go. He'll get there in the end.

I don't use timeout except for violence - eg hitting or biting. Accompanied Thinking Time can be helpful - have you read Positive Discipline? It's very good. It sounds as though your DS is missing you, and perhaps missing cuddles - how about making some time for him to try and prevent the behaviour rather than coming up with other punishments.
