WHEN WILL THE COUGHING VOM END???

Day 5 & DS is still coughing to the point of vomiting . I just want to cry as I feel so sorry for him & I'm so tired from the sleep disturbance too (4hrs last night when he is a brilliant sleeper when well).

Been to docs twice this week & just have to "ride it out". It's just so awful hearing him cough like that & worse not knowing how it all started in the first place!

Have you propped him up in bed..
When dd was little (now 16) I can remember night time cough medicine which was amazing.
Moisture in the air may help the airways, I used to have a steam thing but a kettle would work if you supervised it.

I can remember reading that putting Vicks vapour rub on soles of feet under socks helps a cough but it may have been a myth!

Well we have a baby Vicks equivalent which my DH put on his feet last night & it didn't seem to help as he had a good loads of coughing & then sick. He's 12m btw - never said in original post oops!

Thought about propping up but he moves about so much in his cotbed that it really would be a waste of time unfortunately!

Wish there was a magic serum to give them to banish all nighttime coughing!

Put a pillow under the mattress of the end he sleeps at.

Vicks on his feet also before he goes to bed give him a bath in a steamy bathroom, in the sink put boiling water and Vick/albus oil.

And you can also do what my dc df does, he sucks the snot from their nose but it does help.

I find a few drops of olbas oil or similar in a really big bowl of hot water helps.

Could it be whooping cough?

If he is in a cot raise the head end of the bed under the legs using wood, DVDs or books approx 3inches

I second the olbas oil. My ds has just had this and the olbas oil worked.

I totally sympathise. DS1 has been like this every time he gets a cold since he was born and it does seem to go on for ever

I can remember lying in bed listening to him cough and trying to judge when the coughing was getting to the stage that I needed to go in with a jug night after night -awful! I clearly remember one New Years Eve when he caught us by surprise and having to spend an hour mopping up sick from his bed and also DS2's as they are in bunk beds and he had thrown up against the edge so it had fallen onto poor DS2

Also having to explain to nursery/school that he wasn't poorly when they insisted on sending him home after coughing fits which resulted in him puking (he was never ill enough with the cold to warrant staying at home).

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, he is nearly 8 and does seem to have grown out
of it plus he is now old enough to recognise it and get to the toilet/jug.

Well last night he slept through with no coughing - BIG yay!

The night before he only coughed once & slept through.

The night before THAT DH was holding him as he had a horrendous 15/20min on/off coughing session which threatened vom but thankfully didn't happen.

So he seems to be over it with no rhyme not reason for it's cause - except maybe a viral thing?? Really hope it isn't going to become his 'thing' when unwell!

DS1 has a huge history of this. He is now 17.

It does get easier as they get older. Many a time I have sat up in his bed with him during the night to make sure he stayed propped up.

I also recommend Olbas oil.

Spoke too soon! More coughing just in the last half an hour. No actual sick but I could hear it coming up & being swallowed again . Anyway he seems to have settled now.

I'll try the Olbas thing too.

Hadn't thought about whooping cough as he's had his jab but now I've looked up the symptoms on the NHS website and am wondering if another trip to the doc might be on the cards?? Slightly panicky about this possibility of whooping cough!

DS had similar recently and the disturbed sleep was killing me. We eventually tried Benylin children's night cough medicine (6+). It contains an antihistamine to help with sleep. Worked very well indeed. Wish we'd asked the pharmacist for it sooner.

It's still possible to get whooping cough after imms, though usually mild. Gp would only treat if symptoms for less than 2-3 weeks, and then only to stop spread really. Otherwise it's just a matter of waiting it out. It's not called the hundred day cough for nothing!

Dd 10m, also fully immunised, has suspected WC but the only way to prove it is a blood test, so we'll never know for sure. Cough getting a bit better now, think we're on week 8.

It's probably just a cough though.

My boys have all had this. It was a post-viral wheeze thing, and a salbutamol inhaler worked well. In DS1 it turned into mild asthma. DS2 grew out of it. DS3 still has it.
