I'm new to this site and haven't sought advice like this before . But I have been considering putting a tracking devise on my teen daughters mobile but I have been arguing with myself about the advantages and disadvantages of this. Firstly, I don't know what one to use and how to even get it started. Secondly, I know that when she finds out she is going to be really cross with me! Has anyone else used this or using it?
Thanks

We use avast antivirus on an android phone, but we got it for the antivirus and antitheft stuff that lets us track the phone, not the person. Even if mobile data is not switched on, it lets you send a text message to the phone and the phone reports back its location. The same text message method lets you remote wipe it if it's been stolen.

All good stuff, but of course it also lets you find the location just to work out where your dc is. I like knowing I could do this in an emergency but have never discussed this with the dc because I'd rather they didn't ever think of their phones as something we could use to find out where they are (or they might start leaving their phones at friends houses!). There is a continuous tracking option but even switching it on one day to test it made me feel like a horrible spy, so we never use that - it just feels wrong.

I think being able to remotely query a phone's location is a good thing to have in an emergency but anything more routine and real time, like continuous tracking, really feels wrong.

You have to try and find a balance here, a child that feels she is being spied on will take steps to avoid it, this may include turning it off, or not taking it with her, leaving her at more risk.

Also it is not very reliable, my own phone has solemnly assured me I was in Renfrew, Scotland whilst on Oxford Street, London.
