Nappies - overwhelmed by choice

Hi all,

I realise there is a nappy review section on mumsnet, but even with that to hand, I feel overwhelmed every time I go to the supermarket by the choice out there. Do I go for the trusted (or mistrusted) branded nappy, do I go for the eco brand to avoid cutting down too many trees or do I roll up my sleeves and go for washing nappies myself (although I think I know the answer to that ;) I feel there is almost too much choice.

I have a 4month old ds. Any tips / thoughts how to find 'the one'?

We started with pampers and are now using the supermarket brand. So far tesco, Aldi, and Sainsbury's are good and wilkinsons are not. I wouldn't pay extra for pampers. If I stay with disposables I think I'll always use the supermarket brand.

I'm now trying to choose a reusable nappy system and I'm likely to go for what's cheapest. Can you see a pattern in how I think?

What are you using now OP? What's your priority? Is it budget, environment, or convenience?

Don't bother with 'eco' disposables - you're paying a premium for something that is still going to end up in landfill and sit there for years.

We never used Pampers as the chemical smell was disgusting. We used Sainsburys Little Ones - they are good, but my son is quite long so moved up to the next size way before the guide on the pack suggested. We also used Tesco Value in an emergency and actually was really pleasantly surprised.

We like the aldi ones... But Asdas pretty good too! I was never much of a fan of campers. If money isn't the issue why don't you just try a different one every week til you find the one that agrees with you?

Supermarket brands are often as good as the pampers ones or better and cost much less. I really rate aldi nappies, asda also very good, saonsburys less good. Kiddicare month supply boxes also excellent value.

I've found Aldi are the best. As good as pampers but cheaper! I've heard they're made by pampers. hth

Kiddie care are morrisons so they will be morrisons nappies!

I have pampers new born but when soon to be new born grows out of them I'll go on supermarket brand

My DS is 3 weeks old. I purposely didn't stock up on nappies and I bought packs of different brands to see which we liked. for us the ALDI ones work just as good as pampers, and morrisons we found ill fitting.
Both oampers and ALDI contained a substantial code brown so to us were happy!
All babies are different and are different sizes... It's no good me saying get ALDI when my boy is 5lb and your boy will weigh different.

I have a 13 month old and a 12 day old.

For both, I use supermarket own brands - TESCO I find to be the best.

I use a mix of Aldi's and Sainsbury's own

We used Asda and sainsburys. Started out with Huggies and reuseable ones.

Down to the last packet of pampers that MIL insisted on buying (every other week!) which I'm using for nighttime as the dc are pretty dry at night now anyway, once these are gone we are nappy free.

We use a mixture of naty and cloth. We were bothered about the amount of rubbish that we'd started to produce, but also I hate the chemical smell and colours of pampers. We have used Sainsburys and Morrisons own too and they seemed to do the job just fine. I think I'd only really avoid pampers.

Cloth nappies are really simple, and not really icky. They just get washed once every few days and come out clean. I think this will also save us a about £150-200 in the first year. They also look super cute.

What have you been using til now?

We've found sainsbury's the best - they're the only ones that have contained his poo explosions. Didn't rate pampers much, nor did we find aldi's much good though I know others really rate them. My advice would be to try different brands til you find the one that works for you.

I've used a combination of kiddicare, aldi and pampers. Kiddicare were excellent for explosive poo episodes but terrible overnight (we used up my leftover maternity towels in ds nappy as he peed so much in his sleep!). Aldi are great as they are nice and wide but do have a funny smell that I've only just gotten used to. Mil insists on buying ds pampers as they are 'the best' (read: more expensive), and I'm not one to turn down a freebie, but really they are no better than the much cheaper own brand alternatives.

Cloth nappies are great, and not really too much work although I would advise thinking through your storage option between washes. One of clients used to leave her nappy pail in her utility room that had underfloor heating, stank to high heaven and really put me off using them. Obviously since having my own child and dealing with poo, vomit, snot and pee on a daily basis I'm not so sure it'd bother me now!

We tried other brands but always came back to pampers. Used tots bots reusable nappies to which were nice when he was around 6 months but didn't hold enough once he was 12months. I think we used sainsburys for abit to but they started to leak. At three and a half he's in wearing pampers at nighttime so they have seen him through all the different stages.

We've been realnappy tarts since DD was born. At 18 weeks we've settled on Pampers as we can change them less often and they contain her explosions well. I liked the cheaper ones but for us found they were a false economy. I stock up on big boxes of pampers when they're on offer.

We've also used little lamb reusables at home. Really easy. Is recommend them. I think we're growing out if them although they're meant to last a bit longer. Not sure whether to invest in the next size as DH finds them about icky and it won't be as easy when I go back to work.

Aldi & Lidl

I've used Lidl toujours with both of mine. They seem to hold the most overnight and never leak, even when full they don't overly bulge. They're also really cheap! I love lidl wipes too, they smell lovely and don't rip like Huggins.

We use naty. They seem to fit really well and they don't give dd the nappy rash that huggies did. I will occasionally use pampers 12 hour ones if we have a long train journey

Fantastic - thanks. Must say, I'm not a great fan of the big brands and steer clear of J&J things (too much perfume).

Have been buying different ones each week depending on what's on offer, but am getting to the stage, I just want to find one that's fine and concentrate on the more important things in life e.g. sleep!

Oh another thing... With newborn we were seduced by the pampers with indicator strips to tell you when they're wet... Because of this, we probably went through doublewhat we woulda done with others cos obviously the strip is incredibly ssensitive so even a drop of wee and you're changing the nappy... Clever pampers!
