14mo won't keep his bits in the potty

We've been putting ds on the potty for a couple of minutes every nappy change since he was about 8mo. Sometimes he performs, sometimes he doesn't, no pressure.

But in the last couple of months quite a lot of his wee has ended up on the floor, because he likes to pull his willy out the potty and hold it. We've tried distracting him, and making a thing of his willy needing to stay in the potty, but it's not really working.

Any tips?

IMO - he's too young.

He's reached the stage where he's old enough to try out his own independance, but not yet old enough to take any responsibility for his actions.

Personally I thik that persevering with the potty now would just build up issues which would get in the way when he's old enough to potty-train properly. At some point you will have to 'let go' and encourage him to pee on his own, and that is the point at which you want him to take responsiblity for pointing his willy down. But if it's been a topic for fighting over and he's had lots of "no, don't" about it, then he's going to resist doing what you want him to do at that point.

PrettyCandles - thanks for that.

Anyone else got any thoughts? I know we're not only people to start potty use this young, so I'm guessing other people will have encountered this too!

Boys willys are their favourite toys but at this age they cannot get to them often because they are trapped in a nappy. Think you have to accept that nappiless and sitting down he is going to want to hold it.
Is he tall enough to stand on a step and wave his willy at the toilet? Not tried this myself on one so young but when I potty trained my ds he was 2 1/4 and would not use a potty so we went straight to the toilet.

CK - have been thinking about that. He does seem to have a slight preference for weeing standing up - have had a few occasions where he's taken himself off the potty, only to go and wee while holding on to the doorframe Might give it a go

personally think he is too young..but will add that my 29yr old dh has trouble keeping his bits in the loo so what hope is there for a 14mo..lol Ds trained to wee standing up at age 2.2yrs and it was sooo much easier.
