Baby sleeping bags/ gro-bags

I have been given a couple of sleeping bags (one ikea one and another one) and was wondering whether to try putting ds in them when we start putting him in his cot at night.

Are they safe to use? No overheating risk or anything?

How have those of you who use them found that your dcs sleep in them? Did you find them better or worse than blankets? Would you recommend them?

How much does ds weigh?

Most of these bag say suitable from birth, but actually you need to make sure baby is at least 10lb in weight first.

We used them for our DTs from about 8 weeks - ours came with a guide of which tog rating was appropriate fir different temperatures, and what baby should wear underneath. At this time of year my two are in 2.5 tog with pjs underneath (sleepsuit when they were younger - they're 2.3 now) and their room is 19 degrees.
Definitely recommend them as covers can fall off which can disturb sleep.
As long as you use the right size, there is no risk of slipping head under covers, and as long as you use the right tog rating with appropriate clothing underneath, should be no overheating risk.

How old is your DC? The bags have tog ratings, so as long as the room is appropriately warm/cool, overheating shouldn't be an issue. We used them with DS from about 6 months to almost 3 years. Loved them, they can't kick them off and keeps them nice and snug.

There's no weight guide or anything with either lf them. I expect it was on the packaging but they were second hand. Ds is 9wo and was 8lb15 when he was weighed last week. Maybe I should leave it a week or two.

I agree about the covers. Dd is 19 months and is still using a grobag, because she never keeps her covers on.

Mummy is not up for returning covers 4 times a night

I don't know what the tog rating is either, it would be helpful if they put information like that on the label.

We use them every night and have done from one month old. I actually didn't know the ten pound rule. Thank God all was ok. We also have the ikea one as well as an asda one an grobag original

Ds4 is the only one who likes them. 2.5 tog in this weather with vest and pjs. Room is 19 at the mo but does go up to about 21 or so and hes fine. Hes just turned one and has been wearing them from about 12 weeks when we moved him into the cot

I've just googled ikea sleeping bag, and their 0-6 starts at a 10lb weight. So it might be best to wait for a few weeks. The reason for it, is to decrease the risk of baby slipping down inside.

Mamas & Papas bags are 10lb as well. I think it's to do with how wide the neck opening bit is

I have a variety of makes and all say the tog on the label. They were all second hand so it's pretty faded in some cases but definitely there!
Both my DSs have worn them from a few weeks onward. I thought the advice was 8.5lbs and over but if you go on the Gro company website they have an FAQ section that should tell you.

The grow bag ones have the press studs under the arms for babies under 10lb, other places probably dont have them so are for 10lb and over

They need to be reasonably tight around the arm pits, just a little gap, so they can't ride up over the head.or the baby slip down in to it. Many grobags have little poppers under the arms to reduce that risk. If its a safe fit around the arms and neck then you don't have a problem.

No definitely no info about tog rating on the labels, I just checked. One is ikea amd the other is primark. I would guess 2.5 though cos they feel fairly thick.

I think they are both 2.5 tog as we have used both primark and íkea ones. We didn't get on very well with the ikea one as the zip comes up too high and would rub under ds's chin. We used grobag from about 4 weeks but ds was always very big, born 9lbs, so pretty much always fit.

We ended up buying several other secondhand genuine grobags on eBay, really cheap. They are too expensive to buy new. l love the ones which have popper fastenings on the shoulders.

I have 2 sleeping bags from Sainsbury's. They are 0-6 months and can be used from 8lb 13oz.

I used mine from when I got them as ds was 9lb 6oz at birth so no issue with the weight.

It's 2.5 tog and he wears vest and sleepsuit underneath. Our room is about 18ºC.

I much prefer them to blankets as he kicks them off plus I was paranoid about him slipping under a blanket.

He's 12 weeks now and loves his sleeping bag

Dd is 10 months

She has had grobags plus tesco and asdas versions

All fine

Currently in a 2.5 plus sleepsuit and vest

My babies were quite small, with small heads, so I used to put them in a vest in the sleeping bag, then put a long sleeved top on over the sleeping bag, so they couldn't slip down inside or wriggle out of the arm holes.

I used them for about 18 months - handy when they wake up to feed in the night as they can stay in the bag and fall asleep and it is easier then to just lay them back in the cot.

I love Grobags! My little girl always used to kick her covers off so these have been a life saver.

For those who put their babies in vests AND sleepsuits or PJs in 19 degrees or so, don't the guidelines say just a long sleeved vest, nothing on legs, in a 2.5 tog in those kind of temps? I wonder if I'm not putting enough on my little girl under her Grobag but then she sleeps through the night (most nights) and always seems warm when I get her ready in morning. I think she'd be boiling in anything more under her Grobag.

Tk maxx do proper grobags for about £12. DD was in one fron about 8 wks when she went in the cot!
