Keeping Hands Out Of Poo While Changing Nappy?

Just looking for tips.

3mo DS always has explode-a-poo. The entire napppy area (back, front, and sides) and then some is covered, and the nappy is full, plus it leaks onto his outfit, so that needs changing too. By now, I'm used to this. I know it takes a while to clean up and change the nappy, all while holding DS's feet in one hand to keep them out of it.

But DS's new fun is to reach down into the area with his hands, which then go back up to his head, his mouth, and generally all over the place. How do I help stop this?

Most advice I can find involves wiping his bottom very quickly, but I don't think that's possible, since everything is such a mess, and waaay more than his bottom needs wiping. The other idea I can find is to use toys to occupy his hands, but he still has trouble holding on to toys for very long or even understanding what to do with toys and his hands.

Any other ideas? Or toys that are good to keep a 3mo's hands busy on the change mat?

Put some stickers on his hands.

I would ask the docs though about his poo! I'm sure the odd explosive is fine, but for every poo nappy change to be this way seems a little strange?

I'd be inclined to shove him in the bath if it were me!

DS1s were always explodapoo too. No answers on how to keep hands away from it except a rattly toy to hold maybe. Have you tried going up a nappy size though? If its leaking front back and sides each time that suggests a bigger nappy is needed.

Attach a mobile above the changing table that he can reach and use the top front of the nappy to wipe the poo before you remove it or use wipes maybe?

Other things we have used are small cheap washable towels which our babies have enjoyed grabbing and can be washed.

Purple, my baby is exactly the same. HV told me this is what ebf poo is like! Roll on solids!

Get a roll of sticky tape and stick bits of it to his hands before a nappy change. Fascinating stuff!

I had this problem - giving him a toy worked until poor Sophie got a poo dunking. She'll never be the same again. Her cold dead eyes are even colder.

I think we just speed wiped the worst away, then handed a toy and if all else failed, had a bath!

spoon just worth asking that's all! My DD was breastfed, and whilst she had runny poo at times, I wouldn't say they were explosive every nappy! If they're leaking, maybe change nappy brand?? Or size?

Purple and Spoonful, true it's worth considering, but last I asked my HV (who seems quite knowledgeable), she thought he was still in the normal range. Maybe "explodapoo" isn't quite the right word, it might be "poonami." If he poos a couple times a day, it's quite manageable. But his normal pattern is to go every other day or so, and when it happens, the quantity is impressive

Pasha and Purple, I agree that nappy size and fit is a problem. DS is long for his weight and I keep having to go up sizes to fit the length, but that's leaving space in the width for leaks. I just haven't found a brand that fits him well.

I do think the mobile would be fairly successful, but it's logistically difficult for where we do changes, so unfortunately will be the last resort.

I have sticky tape and flannels to hand, so I'll probably get to try one of those today. I can't say I'm looking forward to it

And yes, so far we've mostly avoided needing a bath as part of a nappy change, but now that hands are involved, I do think that's increasingly going to be the answer.

Explodapoo here too, craptastrophe etc etc... DD can go up to a week between poos so when they come, they are epic & I'm told its completely normal!

At 18 weeks she found her feet and started holding them for me! Not a perfect solution but helped!

I have a really tall ds and all nappies apart from asda little angels comfort fit leaked, if you want to give them a go. He's been in size 4s since he was about 4 months and nowhere near 7kgs.

Also baby wipe packet to hold, some people may think this is a bad idea, but its crinkly so interesting to play with and wipe clean.

Aldis nappies are nice & long,

Oh dear, that's not best then. Mind you ds isn't an exploding pooer, so maybe that's why I think they are good. Have just switched to active fit for a change with the crazy rolly baby. I've not used aldi ones since he was teeny, but you should give them a whirl, cheap.

DS2 is also long and thin, he fits Pampers Babydry best, which I get when they're on offer online. After that Tescos seem ok. Boots and Sainsburys leak, haven't tried any others.

DS1 was long and stocky and he did best in Tescos Value range and Sainsburys, and Pampers leaked with him.

Poosplosion gets used frequently here.

Sounds silly but we used to put the stacking cups on DD's feet when we needed more than a quick nappy change and it kept her distracted and helpfully with her feet in the air while we got on with cleaning up the poonami!

Stickers is a great idea.

Toys sometimes work but I've found they're not 'interesting' enough. Had success handing over things having to do with the change - a clean nappy to hold, wipes packets, or the best one - tightly closed bottle of normally forbidden-to-hold lotion. But this of course was with a baby a bit older, better at gripping. So I'd go with the stickers, though I've never tried them.

Oh and my horrible, terrible suggestion is turning the television on. Done that for babies who were clean nappy refusers. Not long, but for a queued up song, just enough to change. YouTube app on phone works too. Still maybe not feasible for 3mo, but something to remember...

If at home I used to stand DC in bath on bath mat and wipe worse off as took nappy off. The would shower with handheld shower. Bath toys around edge and foot of bath to play with. Bath cleaned afterwards.

This was so easy made me avoid changing else where. Usually knew when a poo was due so this was a realistic option. If we were out for a whole day there would usually be someone to help and distract.

I turn clothes in on themselves to cover the poo, so for example roll the side of the baby grow tightly (all up the back if needed) making sure the poo is tucked safely in the middle.

Next I use the nappy to swipe as much poo off scrotum and bum, as I fold it over tucking it under his bum cheeks. I lay some wipes around on the top of any bits of poo still exposed and then the area is safe from little fingers!

They seem to love it if you give them a wet wipe to hold during all of this; and the. It's a case of grabbing feet and cleaning all the nooks and cranny's as quickly as possible!

If you've got a strong wriggler it sometimes helps to roll them onto their side and tackle it that way.

I always used to change poos on the floor on his baby gym mat with a changing mat on top.

Dd is a long baby and sainsburys own nappies seem to fit quite well around the waist. All others are too lose and leak. I'm still not 100% happy with them as although they are tighter around the waist, the padded bit bunches up a bit, but they are the best fit I have found for a long slim baby.

Oh and i definitely agree with using the nappy to wipe as much off as possible to quickly contain the explosion! Then attempt the rest with wipes.

I popper DD vest over one shoulder so It doesn't fall down - As I have to change her standing up sometimes
