Opinions on the Bumbo seat

Hi all,

I'm toying with the idea of buying a bumbo seat for DS. He's currently only 10 weeks so I've a bit of time to decide yet, although he's getting a lot better at holding his head now and enjoys it if I hold him in a sat up position so I thought around 3 months he'd be about ready.

I'm in two minds though because I've seen the price and would like to get him something good with the money! I read a few people online saying their babies were too big for one, but bumbo say they're good for up to 14 months and although my DS is long he isn't big in a chubby way.

My other trepidation is that I've looked at some second hand and everybody says hardly ever used which makes me wonder if they're so good why does everybody say they have got little use from them?

Has anybody any experience to share please? Did you have one and find it good/bad and why? Did you get a lot of use or hardly any?

i loved mine. My son used it for 3.5 years!!! Daughter however i wouldn't trust because she tipped it up from a young age. Depends on the kid x

I think they have a use if a baby has a flattened skull but otherwise not necessary as they out grow them so quickly.

Absolute waste of money. Dd used hers for about 2 weeks at the same age (she was physically strong really early) then she didn't like sitting in it. And the once she could sit properly she was better off in a high chair. I really wouldn't buy one if I had my time again.

My DS loved his and used it for months and months. Can you buy a second hand one and see?

I got quite a bit of use out of mine, but DS was/is quite skinny. I found it particularly good for weaning. I did get mine second hand though, wasn't prepared to pay the full price for it.

My ds adored his and used it for about 9 months. Was great as a safe place to put him.

I found mine really useful, he loved sitting in it and having a different view of things and was great for feeding when he was still a bit small for the highchair.

There are horror stories though about children tipping out, use with caution, only on the floor, never unattended etc.

For me it was one of my best buys (along with a jumperoo) and I bought a lot of useless crap .

I'd try someone else's before buying one, both my boys HATED it and would fight to try and get out of it straight away so was a complete waste of money!
Most of my friends children have loved them though, and we're handy with the tray for early days weaning, wipe clean etc.
I think they sell pretty well second hand though, not got round to getting rid of mine yet!

Also DS1 had really chubby legs and got uncomfortably wedged in it!! I think they sell well second hand because they are wipe clean and quite hardy so are generally still in v good condition even after a lot of use, I think sellers would always say hardly used tbh!

We liked it as a novelty at the first sitting up stage (for both DC) but didn't use it for very long.

Also, everyone thinks they're sat on a potty, especially on photos...

DS loved ours and we got months of daily use out of it, especially when we got the tray.

Used mine from about 4 months until DD was nearly 1. She loved it. It has also been used by my nieces and my friend's son.

We got one handed down to us! The friend who gave it to us loved it... But it didn't work with ds, he was tipping out. We passed it on to somebody else who loved it andgot great use of it. She gave it back to us and wwe'lltry with dc2. So yep depends on kid!

We got one around 4 months from Ebay which i've just sold on. We used it until she was about 7 months I think. Very useful!

We love ours. Got it when dd was around 4/5 months she still sits in it now at 15 months and she's not small for her age. It was great during weaning time before we got her high chair, it is really easy to clean and fairly portable.

It's useful for a skinny flimsy baby who has trouble sitting like my ds did, but not a chunky baby like my other one! You can always ebay it and get most of the money back.

They terrify me-I have a couple of friends who used them on the kitchen work surface with baby in while they pottered in the kitchen. Same friends were paranoid about baby rolling off sofa onto soft carpet, but had no such compunction about them falling from a great height onto stone floors!

My three children were something of an exception to the rule in all three (years apart) managing to get out of them. They somehow managed to push their heels down on the floor, lift themselves up so their back/bottom was resting on the between-the-legs bit, then they'd 'flop' out. Watched all three do it as little babies, so never trusted them.

To be fair, I have heard others swear by them (unfortunately it's all those who found it's best use was for child on work surface!)

Loved it....used sensibly only on floor....great for short periods....and also for travel for feeding with the tray attached.

We got very little use out of the bumbo with DS1.

He didn't like being confined in it and would try to bend and tip himself out of it.

So if you know anyone with a bumbo, might be an idea to see if you can try it out with your DC to see if they like it before you spend money on one.

Such a waste of money both my kids hated them until 6+ months by which time they could sit in a high chair or by themselves .

We have borrowed one and it's sitting gathering dust. DS is 4.5 months and can't sit unaided yet but he is a wriggler and tenses up after a while and almost tips back out of it. He is a dumpy little fella too and getting him out of it is hard as you need an extra pair of hands. He prefers sitting in his cheapo high chair from ikea and can see more of what is going on.

Love ours but I think def try before you buy. Agree that they're great for weaning - easier to wipe clean than a highchair :)
