Friend is very kindly giving us her Bumgenius (I think V4) nappies when new DC arrives. I've read that they're not brilliant overnight so have bought 5 Bamboozle stretches (size 2) and 2 medium Motherease airflow wraps for night. Am trying to keep costs down so am reluctant to buy smaller sizes too. DD was 8lbs when born so am hoping new DC won't be teeny!

Anything else I should buy in advance? I think the Bumgenius come with inserts-should I buy boosters for the Bamboozles?

A couple of easy-peasy hemp boosters (pre washed lots of times to give absorbancy) will boost the bgs enough overnight for a good while.

Make sure you strip the inserts your friend gives you as I had issues with build up...ammonia smelling nappies. ..which wouldn't be pleasant especially on a nb.

Thanks for the tip-what exactly does 'strip' them mean? Blush

And oh! Do you mean I don't need the bamboozles, I could just add boosters to the Bumgenius for overnight?

I'd say you will use the stretchies overnight, maybe not at first when you are changing more often anyway but when the baby is a bit bigger and going longer at night without a nappy change, pocket nappies like the BG are unlikely to be absorbent enough, even with a booster. I would recommend getting some boosters though, Little Lambs bamboo boosters are good, i had to use them in the day with my daughter otherwise i would get leaks in about 1.5 hours - and the Easy Peasy hemp boosters are thicker and super absorbent for overnight. Used to use them in a bamboozle, folded in half under the popper-in bamboo booster they come with, and that would last all night.

With the bamboozles you should also use fleece liners, basically just a thin rectangle of fleece that you lie flat inside the nappy, it creates a stay dry layer against the skin. You can buy them or make ur own if you buy some thin fleece and just cut it up into rectangle or hourglass shapes.

Bamboozles are brilliantly absorbent, but they need about 8-10 washes before they reach full absorbency otherwise they won't last overnight. You don't need to dry them between washes.

Strip washing is basically a really thorough clean to strip out any ddetergent residue, smells etc. everyone seems to do it differently but I'd say a cold rinse with no detergent, 60 degree long wash with full dose of detergent, preferably non bio powder, then several more rinses til you don't see any more bubbles in the machine. If they smell of tergent when you get them out, keep rinsing! Some people also swear by leaving nappies outside on the line in the rain for a few days to get them smelling fresh. I've never tried it but heard it recommended lots of times and this is certainly the weather for it so might be worth a try if they are smelly!

sliceoflime that's such a comprehensive reply-thanks so much. Will invest in boosters and liners.

I love my bumgenius but only use them every other day as we only have 5. It also saves too much washing. we tend to use disposables overnight. I find the bumgenius stops lo's bum getting sore.

SliceOfLime · 01/02/2014 20:34

That's ok Antoinette reusable nappies are fab but can be a fiddle to get used to, so always happy to try and help someone just starting out Smile

I could be wrong, but I think the size 2 Bamboozles will be gigantic on a new born! Mine stayed in the size 1 for ages (can't remember how long), but my dds are on the small side.

Agree with the poster above who had to boost the Bumgenius in the day time, I also used bamboo boosters, otherwise they leaked really quickly. I wouldn't bother trying Bumgenius at night, you're best off with a two parter.

Sliceoflime is spot on about the fleece liners in the Bamboozles, exactly what we used, they can be rather rough on little bottoms otherwise, and the fleece makes a stay dry layer.

I think they're supposed to be ok from 9lbs? I'm sort of counting on the fact that they'll be worn at night so it won't matter too much if they look ridiculous!
