We had sex. Contractions started 15 minutes later!

Flisspaps · 24/01/2014 18:35

Nothing works.

Not sex, curry, long walks or eating pineapple.

If it did, you'd be advised not to do those things in pregnancy. If they worked, no-one would be induced using a syntocinon drip.

Any old wives tales that work, work due to coincidence. Heavily pregnant women are liable to go into labour at any time, doing anything.

I ate Jaffa cakes and went into labour with DS. I don't think they brought it on.

Sit down, put your feet up and it'll happen when it happens.

Sex here too

I had something to eat, then went back to bed to relax, midwife said thats the right thing to do, have a bath & chill out,
because you ain't gunna stop after that for at least 18 years Grin unless they never leave for Uni Grin

I hadDD 17 days late 4 months ago. I really wish I listened to everyone on here who said, relax, put your feet up and enjoy it (as much as possible, I know it's uncomfortable) and don't bother. I wish I hadn't spent my last 3 weeks of child free life bouncing on the damned Pilates ball, going for walks in the searing heat, drink raspberry tea, choking down pineapples and curry. I even made DH DTD.

Hope you are feeling ok and don't have long to wait.

Rollermum · 24/01/2014 18:53

Sorry if I was unclear - I didn't actual day none of it works! I was induced.

matana · 24/01/2014 19:51

I went greyhound racing... contractions started that night.

ChristineDaae · 24/01/2014 19:54

Apparently nothing! Iv tried everything google has to offer excluding castor oil (don't do that!) and not even a twinge. Given up trying now!

matana · 24/01/2014 20:01

Raspberry tea? I've heard somewhere that's supposed to help.

AMumInScotland · 24/01/2014 20:02

Sex. It maybe an old wives tale, but it's also the reason the doctors try prostaglandin pessaries as a mechanism for inducing labour. Much higher dosage than what your partner can 'deliver' of course, but it must have worked often enough that the medical profession decided it was worth testing out in a more 'medical' context.

Flisspaps · 24/01/2014 20:04

Raspberry leaf tea supposedly tones the uterus to help shorten the 2nd stage. I had forceps and a PPH with both labours and drank lots of RLT.

Seriously, sit down and do nothing. Labour will happen regardless of what you 'do'

ThedementedPenguin · 24/01/2014 20:04

Raspberry leaf tea does not bring on labour. It can soften your cervix but it will in no way bring on labour.

Flisspaps · 24/01/2014 20:06

In the NICE induction guidelines, sex should not be recommended as a way to induce labour as it does not work.

The only method it suggests could be worth carrying out more research into if it might possibly work is nipple stimulation. Even that's tenuous.

notso · 24/01/2014 20:07

What gets the baby in gets the baby out!

Four DC the only one who was overdue was the one I went off sex in. With the other three we were at it like rabbits!

Madonnaquintessential · 24/01/2014 22:14

Mastrubation / sex... Apparantly orgasms are good in more way than one ;) oh, and semen softens cervix. Nothing worked for me. Not even 4 sweeps. I was induced :(

Aquilla · 24/01/2014 22:42

Nipple tweaking! Tried it when I was 7 days overdue with DC2 and it brought on slightly painful contractions within 10 minutes (not braxton hicks). I stopped because it hurt which was a bit silly!
Then at 10 days late I put myself into labour after another 10-15 minutes of gentle 'milking' motion. It was really quite amazing the way it happened and in no way a coincidence! Started tweaking at 9pm and baby arrived 4.5 hours later.
Don't know if it makes a difference but I had Braxton Hicks strongly from 25 weeks for both pregnancies.

Starballbunny · 24/01/2014 22:50

Trouble is dear Nice, is sex plus a great desire not to get induced did work and as DD1 was small for dates and due to be induced a week early, I'm not certain it was pure coincidence.
