Time to wean off the dummy?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts- my little boy is three months old and has always had a dummy to go to sleep, he naps and sleeps fairly well, but increasingly he needs his dummy put back in a few times at night. I'd like to stick with a dummy to reduce sids risk and having been a thumb sucker myself I know thumbs are a lot harder to get rid of! I'm happy to put the dummy in for now, but would prefer not to be doing it in six months time. i just wondered if your little ones had easily learnt to put there own dummy in further down the line, or if now was a good time to wean him off it. I really don't want to get to a cry it out stage,it just isn't for me. Thanks!
