I'm not sure if I'm forcing baby to try and sleep more than he needs. He can't seem to last more than 2 -3 hours without getting cranky:

7-7.30am - wakes up
Morning nap - between 1-3 hours
afternoon nap - between 1-2 hours
Usually awake by 3pm and then up until bedtime 6-6.30pm.

he wakes between 2-4 hours for feeds at night.

Some days he has a little morning nap abd a big afternoon nap (ideal). Sometimes he'll nap for 3 hours in the AM and then awake until bedtime.

Is this relative inconstancy normal? Is getting cranky after 2-3 hours at 5 months okay?

I'd love for my DS to nap like that! He's 4.5 months and will rarely nap longer than 30 mins and so is sometimes tired again after an hour or so! It's exhausting as this results in about five nap attempts every day, every one he fights to the bitter end! I think inconsistency is normal at this age.

FlyAwayToMalibu · 21/01/2014 20:07

But somedays he'll only nap say 2 hours in the morning and will be up from midday until bedtime horribly overtired. Other days, like today, he's had two 3 hour naps.

Night times are very inconsistent as well, sometimes he'll wake for feeds every hour, sometimes only once or twice a night.

My 4.5 month old is inconsistent like that, but then sleep is a bit of an issue. She will never sleep in her cot, battled for 4 hours today trying to get her in there with a swanky new sheepskin, but she wakes the minute I try and put her down. She sleeps in the bed, and not only that but she will only sleep on my boob until she falls into a deep sleep at midnight. We don't have a set bed time as I have to go to bed with her.

Not usually so pessimistic but today has knocked me down...

I think this age is just notorious for terrible sleep as they are changing and learning so much. Hopefully it will settle down soon for us all.

But to answer your original question I think at this age they are only be awake for about 2 hours at a time before getting sleepy.

My 5mo dd usually has very short naps during the day, roughly every 90 minutes and sleeps for 10-12 hours at night. The days are tiring but it's great having a proper sleep!

HugoTheHippo · 22/01/2014 08:51

My 5mo DD is having sleep issues too. She usually naps about 10am for 45 mins (but can be 9am or 11am), a short nap around 1ish but the killer, and the one I'm trying to tackle is a long 2-2 1/2 hour nap she has late afternoon, often not waking until 6.30 or 7 meaning she then won't go to bed until 11 or midnight. Then feeding every three hours in the night and often grizzling in between. At the mo she is protesting about being in her cot and we end up bringing her into bed at some point every night.

Am exhausted and lacking the stamina to really push through with any specific technique. Am hoping that weaning and moving to her own room in a month or so will help. Fingers crossed!

dd2 is 5mo and normally goes down for a nap after being an hour awake. she normally sleeps for about 45mins I think. occasionally a couple of hours in the afternoon.

then sleeps from 7pm til 7-8am with between 2 and 100000 wake ups Grin.

offonajolly · 24/01/2014 04:09

Dd is just under 5 months but she wakes at 7am, has a nap at 9am for 45 mins, a big sleep from 12-2 and depending on how well she slept at lunch might have another 45 mins in the afternoon, she then goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps through with a dream feed at 10:30pm.

Bridezilla3521 · 24/01/2014 10:49

My 5mo naps are all based on what time she wakes up that day which can be anytime between 6.15 and 7.30am. She will usually want a nap after around 2 hours of being awake. Length of nap can vary(45mins-2hours). For example, she woke up this morning at 7.20am and went to sleep at 9.45. She is still asleep but will prob wake in the next few mins! We always have to make sure she doesn't nap after 6pm otherwise she won't be ready for bed at 8!

Bridezilla3521 · 24/01/2014 10:50

Forgot to add, generally she will sleep through the night. Sometimes will wake as she thinks its playtime......(Wednesday night 3am-5.30!!!)

purplemurple1 · 24/01/2014 18:45

500 wake up
600 bottle
830 to 915 nap
1000 bottle and veg
1200 to 1330 nap
1400 bottle
1600 to 1700 nap
1700 bottle
1815 bed
2130 dream feed
200 to 500 wriggle around like crazy sometimes resulting in a bottle!

my 5 month old has no sleep pattern what so ever. wakes & naps as he pleases. wakes several times a night and still feeds every 3 hrs. I'm exhausted tried to get a routine having none of it x
