Any Nurses with a child in Nursery?

I am on mat leave at the moment and looking at sorting out shifts for when I return. My main problem seems to be nurseries seem to only open at 8am and my shifts start at 7.30 meaning I have to leave home at 7am. Does anyone else have this issue? My OH works shifts so some weeks could take the baby but other weeks I would be stuck as on his early week he starts at 6am!

Yes but the nursery opens at 7.30 so that helps. I know what you mean though, most nurseries open later which is useless for shift workers. Our nursery shuts at 6, so DH has to do the pick ups on his way home as I'm at work.

I think everyone just assumes you work 9-5.

What about a childminder. They may be more flexible.

We have a nursery in York which caters for shift workers ? Perhaps call around your area for more info, some of the nurseries may be able to suggest something ?

My friend who's a nurse said its impossible with nurseries as nurseries around our way are 7.30am - 6.30pm. She's on her own but fortunately her mum helps her out when she's on early / night shift etc, so she is fortunate to have her.

Hope you find a solution.

Hi Prettywhiteguitar, which nursery in York do you use? We are currently looking for one which accommodates shift workers as we are both nurses!

This is why I left nursing thirteen years ago...
Is there a nursery on the hospital site working hospital hours?

spookyskeleton · 05/05/2014 13:01

Our local hospital has an on-site nursery (it is a private one) which has a limited number of flexible places for shift workers. Maybe have a look around and see if there is anything similar.

our local hospital has the same as spooky
they officially open at 7.30 but shift workers cn book a place from 7 am
they also offer a discount to nhs workers
what do the other nurses do where you work?

I use a childminder - she opens at 7 and children can stay as late as 6.30. I don't need her that early but she does have a couple of children there from that time. Perhaps investigate local CMs, might be more flexible for shift workers?
