Tips for swallowing medicine tablets

DD (age 8.5) has had a change to her medication. From now on, she needs to take a non-chewable tablet once every morning.
At the moment, her medication is a tablet that we can open up, sprinkle the contents onto yoghurt and she swallows it down.
This is different!

How in the world am I going to get her to take a pill by just swallowing with water/milk?

Any tips as she has quite a gag reflex.

PS There is no other alternative to this pill so she has to do it and we cannot change to a different type.

Easiest way, put tablet under tongue behind front teeth and then have a big drink try not to think too much abt the tablet and it will just be swallowed with the drink. It does work even though it sounds like it shouldn't. Practice with something smaller first ? Tic tacs maybe

Is it a type of tablet that you can mash up between spoons until it's a powder? Then sprinkle on etc...

If not, how about chewing it up with a bit of toast? Stuff it in a bit of croissant?

I used to have to take tablets at a similar age: developed a technique of dropping them right down the back of my throat then washing them away. You need head tilted back and mouth wide open; hold the tablet between first and middle fingers then drop. Mine tasted foul so I couldn't stand to have them touch the inside of my mouth.

This is a 'do not crush, chew, break' pill which is a bit of a pain.

thank you for the suggestions, we had a practice with some small pieces of cooked pasta this evening. Tomorrow we'll move onto tic-tacs...fab suggestion! Friday, we'll try the shell of her current medication as it's a similar size to the new meds.

Thank you for the suggestions.

The practise nurse showed DS a tip when he had to start taking tablets that seems to work well.

Put tablet as far back on tongue as you can, take a glug of water, tilt head to one side and swallow.
