If your DC travel to Secondary school, how well do you know their friends?

DS1 is in year 8. He seems to have a wide group of friends and sees some of them at activities outside of school.

He goes on the bus to school and my role for the other activities is limited to dropping off/picking up outside, so I never get to meet his friends.

He's welcome to invite them back here and does occasionally but it's not easy logistically, as they are quite well spread, so it doesn't happen that often.

I was just reading Maryz sad thread about her 20yo DS and his friends and realised that actually I know very little about DS1's friends.

Should I know more and how can I change it?

I have a yr 7 DS who goes to high school by school bus and so far haven't met any of his new high school friends. His closest friends are still his old primary school ones though, whom I know well. I think if he became massive friends with someone new I would want to get to know them a bit. DS is my eldest so I don't know if it is normal to not know your DC's friends once get older?

Yes, if there was one particular friend I'd find a way of engineering things so I met them on a regular basis. He's not at school with any of his of friends from primary school and his friendship group at Secondary seems to involve about 8/10 boys, no one particularly close friend.

If I suggest someone comes round for tea or on a trip out with us he always picks someone different, so although I've met a few of them, I don't feel that I'm getting to know anyone iyswim.
