Help - toddler with worlds worst cold & now cough!

Any ideas what else I can do to help my DD? It is the worlds worst cold, I have it too and it's horrendous. Finding the whole thing harder than chicken pox for her and me.

I use a saline spray & nelson cough remedy. What else can I do other than sit it out? When she gets a bad cough her throat gets very swollen & sore after a few days and she's in pain when she has a coughing fit at night.

The fits are quite scary!

Keep her propped up at night by putting books under the cot legs at one end.
Vicks or snuffle babe on chest and feet
Regular calpol to help stop her throat being irritated
Steam in the bathroom (eg a sink of hot water while she's having a bath).
You have my sympathies, we've just come out of a horrid cold.

My dd has the same thing. Been sick the last 3 nights due to enormous coughing fits. Have you been to the gp? Ours has given her a ventolin inhaler to help with the breathing.

Also prop her up on more pillows than you usually would to sleep. We have found not giving cold drinks helps, Luke warm water doesn't make her cough as much as if she has a slug of cold water. Last night we also put the heating on timer to come on at 3.30am to warm the air before her 'witching hour' coughing fit time of 4.30. For the first time in a week it's 6am and she is still asleep, so I'm wondering if the cooler night air was making the cough worse. Perhaps worth a try?

Alternate calpol and ibuprofen too, and loads of fluids.

Hope she feels better soon!

Me and my 13 month old have had this. I'm still not better 10d on!

I found lots of cuddles and particular help with regular calpol and olbas oil on a cloth near her head in cot.

All the best. It's truly dreadful. It's like a super bug cold. I usually barely sneeze once with a cold but this has been hideous.

Thank you for all the suggestions ladies. Really helpful!

  • DD spins round in the cot so much that I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to prop up the cot on one end? She might end up with her head facing downwards?
  • I tried resting her head propped on a flat pillow. She enjoyed that for naps on 2 consecutive days but then told me to take it out!
  • I'll buy some more snuffle babe, can't find my pot. I've heard about putting it on the feet and covering with socks. How on earth does that work?!

Southpaws - I'm not quite at the stage of going to the GP; it's not as bad as your current situation by the sounds of it. This morning at 5am was the major coughing fit that prompted me to post here. I will go if there is no improvement in 24 hours. A warm drink sounds like a good idea. I can put a bit of honey in can't I at this age? (18 months). The heating actually came on this morning in the night (our mistake) and it was roasting when she woke with her major coughing fit so perhaps the air was too hot/dry? I had to open some windows at 5am!!

Sheissmall - It really is dreadful isn't it. I'll be so grateful to be well again. xo
