Never did, but then I haven't bottlefed. It isn't necessary if you wash things in very hot water with some soap and leave them to air dry.

zephyrcat · 11/07/2006 18:41

Phew!! DD is 13 weeks old now and there's been more than one occasion where I've been caught with no bottle so given it a good clean in really hot water and she's been fine so just wondered if 6 months was still a strict guideline!!

With my third I'm not sure I ever sterilised - but he was breastfed initially and then I washed the bottles in the dishwasher

IamBlossom · 11/07/2006 21:50

I stopped at a year but with hindsight the dishwasher is ample and this one (am 38 weeks) will not have sterilised bottles for so long. Fact.

i would say as soon as they start to crawl and pick things up off the floor to eat

Beauregard · 11/07/2006 22:12

12 months with dd1

bayleaf · 11/07/2006 22:18

There is a thread somewhere ( that I'm too lazy to find!) about how a microbiologist ( I think!) in a special care baby unit basically said there was no need at all- just very hot soapy water - wash thoroughly and air dry. I mainly breast fed ( but did express a bit )- and must have stopped sterilising by 4-6 weeks after reading this - no ill effects.

Here

zephyrcat · 12/07/2006 12:00

Thank you for that link - it's certainly an eye opener after always beig told to sterilise everything - I 've only ever done bottles though, never bothered with dummies etc and so have found myselfself wondering more often than not - what's the point??!!

poisson · 12/07/2006 12:48

6 months

woudlnt last that long if i had my time again

Tutter · 12/07/2006 12:49

12mo but he is my first

next time i doubt i'd sterilise non-milky things

tribpot · 12/07/2006 12:50

I'm still doing it and ds is nearly 13 months! I don't know why, it's this bizarre compulsion ...

Thomcat · 12/07/2006 12:55

Both breastfed initially but with DD1 did it for 6 months.

DD2 - only ever used dishwasher and then keep bottles in fridge. She's now 7 months and not worrying about keeping bottles in fridge anymore.

Her 4 yr old sister has put her younger sisters dummy in her mouth and then back in her sisters, with a streaming cold and no ill effects so what the point! LOL.

PiccadillyCircus · 12/07/2006 12:57

Can't remember but DD is 9.5 months and haven't sterlised for a while.

schneebly · 12/07/2006 12:58

9 months with ds1

6 months with ds2

probably not as long as that when/if I have another!

Janos · 12/07/2006 13:41

I stopped sterilising bottles at about 7 months too, and DS is an absolute picture of health.

Never sterilised cups, plates, cutlery etc.

ScoobyDooooo · 12/07/2006 13:44

Blimey i did it for 1 yr with ds as he was my first & this is what we were told to do.

To be honest dd is now 6 months & i am still doing it, its more of a habit now than anything else

sandradee · 12/07/2006 13:59

I'm still sterilising and DS is 15 months. Friend of mine's MIL is a midwife and says as long as you are still using teats it;s best to sterilise.

dmo · 12/07/2006 14:02

my boys are 14mths apart and i never put the steriliser away
i sterilzed everything took flannels to toddler group which had steriling fuild on so i could wipe the toys etc.
but i guess you dont know when its your first you try to do everything right

RTKangaMummy · 12/07/2006 14:08

As with St george's link to my other thread
