Questions about upper lip tie

DS (2.5 years) & DD (9 months) both had tongue ties which were corrected when they were tiny babies. I was looking up something else last night and came across images of upper lip ties and now think they have those too Hmm DS doesn't have a gap between his front teeth but the frenulum is attached very close to the top of his teeth. From what I can see in DDs mouth, hers looks similar.

I have tried googling for images of normal lip frenulums but am having little luck so unsure if what am seeing is normal or not. Are there any lip tie experts out there who can help? Thanks.

might be worth looking up Analytical Armadillo /Milk Matters on Facebook. I believe it's hard to get them done on NHS but not impossible.

Thank you. Will have a look now. I am desperate to find another small child so I can gawp in their mouth and compare!

I battled to get a referral for lip tie as nobody seemed to know what to do, however we are now under the Consultant for oral surgery and they are keeping an eye on it. Might be worth asking for a referral? Ask for oral surgery - they kept sending me to ENT.

Thank you. I don't know if am being paranoid so wonder if a dentist could say yes/no/maybe before I start asking for referrals? Thinking I may organise a play date and then ask to look at the other children's lips Shock

There's a FB page about tongue ties which has a lot of info about lip ties as well - and lots of pictures. If you search under tongue tie you should find it.

My DS (3yo) had a tongue tie, which was divided at a few weeks. I think he also has an upper lip tie, as you describe the frenulum is connected very close to the top of his teeth. He also has a large gap in his two front teeth - although this is something that runs in my side of the family (the gap, not the tie).

Our dentist said that even with the family history it was a large gap and referred us to a specialist dental hospital to get it checked. They said that it was probably the frenulum that was stopping the teeth coming together, but that unless it was causing a problem then they would leave it, and that it is likely that his teeth and gums will grow down as he gets older, i.e. he will grow out of it.

I'd get your dentist to check it out, and they will be able to refer you if necessary. But if it's not causing a problem with speech or eating then probably nothing needs to be done...
