Swimming in winter - crime of the century?

My 21 month old DD loves going to swimming sessions but the changing area at the pool and often the water itself isn't very warm and yesterday she was really shivering when she came out. We dressed her as quickly as we could but last night she was up all night with a temperature and a bad cough. My mum says I'm to blame for taking her swimming and thinks we shouldn't go during the winter. I feel like a terrible mum now - is she right?

what difference does it make if the pool is inside and she is dry with dry hair when you leave?

Being cold doesn't give you a cold but it can make you more likely to be susceptible to cold viruses.

If she's cold in the pool consider a wetsuit type thing and maybe take an extra poncho style towel poolside for when she gets out.

Or find a warmer pool!!

Of course its not your fault she had a temp last night. Swimming is a vital life skill and if she's having fun don't stop.

Your Mum is wrong. you did nothing to cause it. That's the sort of thing my Mum used to say! It may be she was a bit shivery yesterday as she was coming down with something, that's happened to us before. We swim every weekend whatever the weather. Sometimes the pool can be a bit cold but ds3 always wears a shorty wetsuit but that's just so we can stay in longer without him moaning. Don't worry and keep swimming.

No of course she's not right. As jinty said she was probably already coming down with a virus and that's why she was shivery. Being cold doesn't make you ill. Might be worth finding a warmer pool though just for comfort!
