Ds just sleeps all the time - until what age is this normal?

Ds sleeps all the time. He does wake up regularly for feeds, but then goes straight back to sleep. He has maybe half an hour to an hour a day where he's awake and alert and not feeding, but that time is in minutes at a time, not in one long go. He's three weeks today. Is this still normal? Can't remember what the dd's were like!

Dd was exactly the same at 3 weeks. She's now 15wks and it's only in the last couple of weeks that she's been staying awake for much longer periods.

Thanks coppertop, that's good to know.

my ds2 was like that until about 3 months too - we used to say you woldn't even know there was a baby in the house! It is a different case now that he is 18 months and one of the most energetic children I know!

my ds was like this til about 10wks.

emkana · 10/07/2006 20:11

Thanks for that.
Because of all the worrying about ds I watch him like a hawk all the time and worry whether he's okay or not, bit too much sometimes.

DS2 was just like that - he was hardly awake at all for the first 3 or 4 months. I worried then because he was so different from DS1. He is absolutely fine, but has always needed more sleep than DS1, even now.

emkana · 13/07/2006 08:13

I still have moments where this worries me, he is just soooooooo sleepy.

Emkana - it is only natural for you to worry about him after all you have been through pet! Anyone would feel the same. I do mean what I said about DS2 though - he really only woke up to feed for quite a few weeks and now..well I wish he would sleep more now!

emkana · 13/07/2006 08:22

Thanks schneebly

DS slept all the time for about 2 -3 months .. think DD was quite similar (don't remember as dd is subsequent child )

Jasnem · 13/07/2006 08:30

2 of my 3 have been like this, too. My first fed, changed slept and that was it for at least the first three months. It was a real shock whn my second didn't sleep all the time. I though something was wrong.
They are both fine, just different.
ds also slept all the time He's more alert at nearly five months, but at three weeks he had only ever been awake long enough to feed and have his nappy changed.

Try to cross this one off your list of things to worry about.

emkana · 13/07/2006 09:11

Okay I'll try

mine all slept most of the time when they were little - and pretty much for the first year they were only ever awake for up to 2 hour stretches - if they went past that they got overtired and couldn't fall asleep.

Don't wake a sleeping baby

lazycow · 13/07/2006 13:54

Thank your lucky stars he sleeps. Ds needed the sleep but had trouble falling asleep. For the first year of his life he needed to sleep every 2 hours (more like very hour for the first few months) but couldn't fall asleep easily as any noise or stimulation would keep him awake so would get wound up and cry. Feeding didn't work as he got so agitated he couldn't feed. This led to a LOT of crying as you can imagine- much better to have a baby who sleeps when he needs it .

blueshoes · 13/07/2006 14:18

I have a friend whose baby slept for 22 hours a day. They had to wake her up for feeds. She is now 3 and (still) delightful.

spugs · 16/07/2006 22:29
