5 months old Ds just started taking a dummy. Always rejected it before. Is this normal?

My Ds has always been unsettled and difficult to get to sleep so early on I tried to introduce a dummy. He always took against anything but a nipple in his mouth waste of money on a bloody medela expreser . Tonight as a last resort I returned to the dummy and to my suprise he took it and settled. Anyone else experienced a late dummy taker? Could it be to do with his teething?

If he is settled why worry?

I'm not particularly worried, just puzzled at his change of heart.

My dd started taking a dummy at around 5 months having always rejected it before. She's still obsessed with it now but knows she's only allowed it in bed.

We found it a total life saver as she was previously a total nightmare to settle. She sleeps with 5 in her bed so she can always find one in her sleep, we've never had the problem of having to get up in the middle of the night to find it for her.

Part of me regrets letting her have one at the time most experts advise you start withdrawing it, and I dread ever trying to wean her off it. But at the time it saved us, we were really struggling with her sleeping.

I never tried early on with one but after 5 months of constantly having a nipple in his mouth and me being fed up I gave him one and he accepted, now the task of weaning off dummy at 14 months tho which isn't so good! If it works tho go with it

My DS1 was exactly the same. I rejoiced the day he took it. He then became very attached to it. Once he started exploring (approx 10-14 mths) we limited his dummy to bed time, nap time and for comfort after a bump/fall/fright. We then limited it to bed time and eventually stopped it completely aged 3. He got immense comfort from it and he broke the habit without any distress whatsoever.

All pluses, no negatives as far as I'm concerned.

My DS2 took a dummy at 9 months. He found an old dummy of DS1 in the toy box and wanted it from then on while he was teething and to sleep. I had no trouble weaning him off of it, when he was about 2 he no longer wanted it

And yes he slept better with it too. Dummies are great in my eyes!
