Hi everyone. I've started a new thread to celibrate (!) that we have been potty training for 9 weeks today and are no further forward than we got to in week 2.
My DS will do wees in the potty or toilet on request and sometimes says he needs to do them himself. But he still has accidents every day (especially at nursery). He only poos in his pants which is very frustrating.

He's 3y7m BTW. I can't decide if I started before he was ready and that's why it's taking so long or if actually I've started too late and now he's older (and cleverer) & he's playing me along.

I'd love to hear from anyone else whose still struggling to get a dry child after so long & especially from anyone who got there in the end - did it just suddenly come good or was it really gradual?

Today has been 3 wees on the potty, 3 wet pants and two pooey pants - it can't go on like this for ever can it!!
Please offer me some hope!!

You not doing too badly Rosieglow. At least he is trying.

Ds has been on and off the potty for days now. All poos in the last 4 days have been in pants or on the floor or lawn

Most wees go in pants as well and then every now and then he does one in the potty.

He doesn't seem to care at all about being wet.

He weed in the car this afternoon. I had asked him if he needed the toilet before we left his grannys house and he said NO. Then just as I took him out of his seat he climbed into the front of the car and weed all over the handbrake .

I was talking to sil this afternoon and she reckons he is not ready but said that there's no going back at this stage. She went through the same thing with her DS1 and it took 3 months to potty train. I am at end of week 5 now.

well rosieglow - you're doing well - we'er 7 months in and still trying!!! DD is 3 in October and went through a stage of dry days although only at my initiation. Great bladder control and would put her on every 2 hrs or so and she would wee and that's it. Poos are a different story - usually tries to hold them in but if you catch her right she will "perform". However gone down hill rapidly now and although will sit on the potty isn't weeing in it and is havingmost of her wees off teh potty and on the carpet. HELP!!!!!

oh knat I feel for you. I am in week 6 and thought that was bad (sorry) and I am completely puzzled. Ds has gone through dry stages and then complete wet stages. He has also been going on his own initiative so knows exactly when a wee or poo is coming and what to do.

He was quite good yesterday with only 1 wee accident. Poo in pants though. He woke up this morning, went into the bathroom and did a poo in his pull-up. Didn't quite make it to the potty but had the right idea to get to the bathroom. He then came into our bedroom with poo on his legs and feet .

Has had quite a few wee accidents today one of which was in a toy store and he had shorts on!!!

He has also done a lot of wees on the potty today (has been drinking a lot) but only once on his own initiative. Looking at it now, unless we are at home, he has never really told me that he needs the toilet in order for me to take him to one. I have explained this to him again and again but it's not getting through.

I have started now to try and motivate him with a coin each tinme he uses tthe potty. He then puts the coin into his special tin (which he made at playschool)and collects them until he has enough to buy himself a magazine or a treat. I can't believe I am now paying my 2.8 yr old to wee/poo in the potty! What am I doing?

I feel that DS was not ready even though he showed all the signs a long time ago. I don't want to go back to stage one again but its soooo hard. How have you coped????

thanks reece - i don't know if i have coped!!!! We tried star charts and chocolate buttons but not really to much success. I have no intention of giving up now as i think i will stillhave the same if i leave it - i guess some kids just take longer (it would have to be mine!) You do wonder if you are doing something wrong. I've tried to not make an issue of accidents but i think she just thinks its ok then. I've tried being quite firm with her - tone of voice etc - not to do it on the floor do do it on the potty. I've said when she feels the wee wee coming (i know she knows sometimes because she crosses her legs) to say i want my potty. Today she sat on the potty v briefly and then 3 mins later wee'd on the floor! I just said her name loudly and she looked a the floor and said i want my potty! Please let there b elight at the end of the tunnel!!!!

Hi Knat. Well DS was done a few wees in potty today but only at my initiation and with bribes as well!

His poo ended up in his pants yet again. He stood in the lounge trying to take his shorts and pants off. He wants out of the mess straight away yet still doesn't do it in the potty.

How long will it be before they get it?

Is there anybody out there that has past experience of potty training for weeks/months on end and that can advise us on how long it took and what finally got DS/D to understand the whole potty thing?

knat · 24/07/2006 20:59

yes reece - i wish someone could tell us what finally made them "click". Here's hoping someone can help.

DS was doing ok whilst we were at home this morning but as soon as we left the house this afternoon it was a nightmare. He used the potty before we left which was great. Both boys were in the back of the car drinking away on their sippy cups (due to the heat) so lots of fluids were going in. On arrival at shops I asked DS2 if he needed toilet. He said NO. Got to the ground floor of the store (no toilet on this level) and he stood and did a really large wee on the floor . I cleaned it up as best I could and took him immediately off to the car to get him cleaned up and changed. Ten minutes later he weed again back in the same store . I had no more clothes so I had to buy pants, shorts and a t.shirt. Good job the sale was on So we were all clean again and then with a grin on his face he said 'Mummy theres a wee wee coming in my new shorts'. I quickly paid for my goods and asked him to hold it in. Don't know if he was teasing me. Back at the car I asked him if he needed the toilet before we headed home as it was a long journey. NO, No, NO'. Just as he was getting in he said ''OK mummy I need a wee wee' and did 1 in the travel potty. I am delighted he used the travel potty for the 1st time but I am feeling desperate over the wee accidents in the store. He didn't have any control. I feel that I have little choice now but to put him in a pull-up when we are out. What do you think?
