grumpy, overtired newborn :-(

my little one is 18 days today., its our first.

she has so far been a placid baby but the last day or so seems to be very irrataible during the day.

last night she slept from 8:30pm till 2:30am were I woke her for a change and feed ( she is formula fes on aptamil)

she went down at 3am ish and slept till around 6am to 7am and has basically been up and grumpy since then. we have fed her, winded her, changed her ...basically tried everything everytime we put her down she starta crying. I assuming she is now quite over tired and the only thing that sooths her is a dummy(first time using one) , she semi falls asleep then when it falls asleep is awake crying again. she just seems really fretful. ..is this normal?

Have you tried not putting her down and just letting her sleep in your arms?

Also, try feeding her some more, she's coming up for a growth spurt and could just be hungrier than you expect.

lots more sleep is what she needs. don't worry about getting her to sleep in her crib, instead go for a long walk with her in the pram, or walk around the house with her in the sling, till she falls asleep. do the same every few hours...

It does sound normal, I'm afraid!

A wrap sling will save your sanity. seriously! see if there is a sling meet near you. congratulations on your baby. :)

we are feeding her 90ml every 2 to 3 hours or so. Although this morning she has been having feeds closer together.

I do let her sleep in my arms but even today she just wouldn't settle in my arms for longer than 10 mins or so

I used to give in at this point and go for a very, very long walk. DD used to get too tired to eat, too hungry to sleep, and it was only the pushchair or the car that got her to sleep for a while. Just have a bottle ready for the moment she wakes up!

I found that mine would cycle in their little heads, if that makes sense.

And so it goes on. You need to insert bottle/fresh nappy/cuddles/whatever at the bit just between forgets and sleepy, so that there is nothing to keep prodding her into wakefulness. Walking around in the pram does help with this. Also, I'd just let her have as much milk as she wants - maybe it's a growth spurt.

And yes, it is normal for them to be totally different from one day to the next, sorry!!

Oh, and having her sort-of upright in a sling may help if she's uncomfortable due to reflux or colic or something.

The first couple of weeks babies seem to be very sleepy then they wake up and sleep less ! It's very very normal and the only things that worked for us were rocking/ cuddling in the dark/ lots and lots of walking around with baby in sling and buggy

she is finally asleep bless her. I will defo try going for walks next time and putting her in the baby carrier we got.

I tried a sling when I went to john lewis and I didn't feel confident putting it on..this was before baby arrived with massive bump in the way so may need to go revisit john lewis

Try a local sling meet, if you can - you'll save money and meet some other mums! If you are in a big city then you might have a city FB group for mums (e.g. Nottingham Mums or something like that).

They are expert slingers at sling meets! By which I mean they will be able to help you try different slings and choose the right one for you and your baby.

Pram, sling, car. Do what you have to to get her to sleep. Also let her sleep on you if she wants. At this stage that's what she needs.
