Hi. My husband & I are having a girl in January. We are considering the name "Ophelia" but have read some negatives comments. We would really appreciate as many honest opinions about the name as possible please. What comes to your mind or what do you associate the name with please? Thanks a lot in advance.

I like it, however 'Hamlet' puts me off at bit.

Ophelia is lovely but I'm afraid it brings to mind the Ophelia in Hamlet and her unfortunate end.
Also the painting by John Everett Millais of her in the river....

That said, in my grandmother's culture, they believe it is fortunate to name a child after someone who had a troubled life, as it means your child will have a blessed life because all the bad luck has happened to the namesake, IYSWIM.

If you really like the name though, then go for it. It doesn't matter what others think, but if it doesn't sit well with you, have a back up name you'd consider. Good luck.

Oh I think its lovely. I know a girl whose named after a legend who cut up her father and burned his limbs in a big old dad fire, I don't think he's unduly concerned (and she gives no impression that he needs to be!... Yet... Wink )
Have you thought about only socialising with normal people who don't generally associate day to day life with Shakespeare?

I really like it (but then again, I've never read Hamlet).

I considered the name myself. But I decided that if she drowned I would never forgive myself.

I picked another Shakespearean name instead

It's lovely, if you and your partner love the name then you go with it, we have an unusual name for our little girl and we love it, we get interested comments but I don't care it's our special name for our special baby girl. I think Ophelia is gorgeous x

My 18 year old sister is Ophelia and we live/d in the same town as the bard himself. Hardly anyone makes the connection and more often than not she is told she has a beautiful name.
I'd say go for it! I've always been a bit jealous of her name!
