Starting training today but not quite sure what Im doing!

My ds is 2.4.Im not sure he is ready so am attempting something today.Not sure how ready he is.What exactly should I do?
He isnt keen on sitting on the potty.How can I encourage this?
Do I ask him every now and then to sit on the potty?or just wait til hes done it and then he will learn to ask?
